President Trump said Thursday that he would rename Veterans Day, on Nov. 11, as Victory Day for World War I and May 8, widely known as V-E Day, as Victory Day for World War II, so that the United States could celebrate its achievements in those conflicts.
We won both Wars, nobody was close to us in terms of strength, bravery, or military brilliance, but we never celebrate anything, Mr. Trump said in a late-night post on Truth Social. We are going to start celebrating our victories again!
I have no words. Where does one even start?

Its waste and people should understand that the meaningless unproductive stupidity is a sign of his incompetence, nothing else.

(9,212 posts)Was there a specific ruling by the SC that allowed this particular executive power? I believe many of the powers were written into the constitution. imo they were always excessive as is the whole executive position- too much power with no easy way to reign them in or remove them.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trump_v._United_States allows him to ignore the courts - the most they can do to him is persuade other parts of the government to ignore orders from Trump. That means he has the confidence to try anything; a lot of what he's done so far could have been prevented if some Republicans in Congress had stopped him, but so few of them have any ethics that they've sat back and allowed him to do what the fuck he likes.

(8,319 posts)The Soviets arguably won the war in Europe in WWII.
To say that the US were the strongest in WWI is pretty laughable. The US wasn't really operationally involved until 1918 (Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Wood weren't until May-June 1918). Any of the other warring parties on the Western Front were arguably stronger than the Americans for the majority of the war. The Germans were already near collapse by 1918, with the Spring Offensive of that year being a success in the way the Ardennes Offensive was initially successful in WWII.
ProfessorGAC
(76,985 posts)The US contribution to winning WW1 was more money & materiel.
We weren't there long enough to have made a huge tactical difference. But, we were strategically important.
We would disagree about the war in Europe, though.
Disaffected
(6,480 posts)about two thirds of the German army and air force were consumed on the eastern front. In fact, the Russian land and air forces were so strong at the end of the war that the allies feared they might not stop at Berlin and proceed to take over all of Europe. IIRC there was even a contingency plan drawn up that would have seen a retreat to England and eventual relaunching of a counter invasion from there and N Africa.
Of course the draft dodger wouldn't know, or care, about any of that. I wonder what Trump would have done if he had been born 15 or 20 years earlier (were bone spurs a thing in those days?).

Troop numbers and casualties can be measured.
Bravery ... how do you quantify?
Military brilliance. I believe it was Nigel Hamilton's trilogy FDR at war that showed the British generals were far more experienced at warfare than American top brass.
AI ChatGPT weighs in: [British] "Field Marshal Alan Brookes wartime diaries, where Brooke is often blisteringly critical of American military leadership.
Brooke often viewed American generals as inexperienced, overconfident, and lacking in strategic maturity.
He believed that many of them, including Eisenhower (at first), were too deferential to political aims or Roosevelts vision, and not seasoned in planning complex, global operations.
Hamilton quotes Brooke expressing frustration over U.S. impatience and lack of understanding of logistical realities, especially regarding early plans for a cross-Channel invasion (which the British thought premature in 194243)."
But you run with it, Donnie.
