Great News

For anyone who hasn't heard the news yet.....Australia went exactly the same way as Canada in our elections that were held yesterday. The leader of the conservative party (Peter Dutton) lost his seat. The Labor Party won in a landslide. We are now going to govern with a majority government which has totally denounced Trump. A major contributing factor towards Dutton's demise, they started using the terms "woke", "DOGE" and MAGA.

Poilievre lost his seat in Ontario but an MP in Alberta is giving up his seat so that Pollievre can stay in parliament and retain the leadership of the UCP (there will have to be a byelection first but: 1) Pollievre is from Alberta, and 2) Alberta is the Texas of Canada, so he’s probably a shoo-in), so we’re not rid of the smarmy jerk yet. Plus, the Liberals didn’t win a majority, and the UCP actually has more seats now than before the election. They lost but they are emboldened. We dodged a bullet but divisive conservative politics in Canada is not dead.

I know in Canada you don't have to live in a riding to be an MP from there but this is kind of ridiculous

I’m still worried. I was hoping that that brand of politics would be dead here after the election but apparently not.

If Americans were required to vote, enough of the lazy, the blasé, etc. would take it seriously and we wouldn’t be in this mess.

Australia has always had compulsory voting. It is made easy to do by having our elections on a Saturday, with early voting from approximately 2 weeks before. It is usually a fun day on election day by having at most polling booths a barbecue going where voters can buy a democracy sausage with mostly friendly banter. We have a totally independent election referee who deals with discrepancies (Australian Electoral Commission). They also are the ones that draw up the boundaries.

I have volunteered on the polling booths for about 50 years and have enjoyed the experience immensely.

We are very proud of our system and hope it never changes.

Don’t know why we’re so far behind other democracies..gotta be the Citizens United fiasco but big money has been the problem for a long time here.

You're welcome!

Vote counting is still ongoing, so the final number of bums on seats in the various houses of parliament aren't yet available, but it was within 3 hours of the last poll stations closing that it became obvious this was going to be a landslide defeat for the opposition party.

Whatever helped Trump's campaign to poison the minds of voters in America, the same approach seems to be the kiss of death elsewhere in the world.

There will be flow on effects.
Rejection of Trumpism is one thing, a moral victory.
China looking for increasing traffic with trading partners where tariffs don't apply, is quite another.
