Midlands Voices: Nebraska Congressmen should show more courage in standing up to Trump

By John Cavanaugh Former Nebraska Congressman
I was born in the last year of World War II, and have lived through good times and bad with optimism about the future of our country and our world. But now at 80, I am no longer hopeful about my childrens and grandchildren's future. The wholesale destruction of basic pillars of our country at home and abroad has led me to a very dark vision of our country's future.
I watch the vengeful and reckless assault on our amazing science and medical research and on rural hospitals and public health providers. I abhor the irresponsible removal of 10,000 dedicated public servants working to control the spread of disease and create cures. We all see the greatest threats to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, to public education, to our free and fearless press and media and to our legal profession and the courts.
Every day brings a new outrage, and this week brought the blatant, explicit breach of faith with Ukraine when President Donald Trump laid out his peace plan of total capitulation to (Vladimir) Putin and his lawless and brutal invasion. That is the greatest betrayal not only of an ally but also of our own national security interest by any president in American history.
The litany of executive horrors goes on and on among numerous other things, jeopardizing our national parks, the safety of air travel and our ability to predict life-threatening weather. The President of the United States, meanwhile, is single-handedly dismantling the global economy while destroying American agricultural markets around the world, which will be devastating to Nebraska.
