https://www.rawstory.com/trump-announces-alcatraz-reopening/Donald Trump on Sunday announced that he would be "reopening" the famous prison on Alcatraz Island.
snip...
"REBUILD, AND OPEN ALCATRAZ! For too long, America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat Criminal Offenders, the dregs of society, who will never contribute anything other than Misery and Suffering," Trump wrote. "When we were a more serious Nation, in times past, we did not hesitate to lock up the most dangerous criminals, and keep them far away from anyone they could harm."
Trump then continued, saying, "Thats the way its supposed to be. No longer will we tolerate these Serial Offenders who spread filth, bloodshed, and mayhem on our streets."
"That is why, today, I am directing the Bureau of Prisons, together with the Department of Justice, FBI, and Homeland Security, to reopen a substantially enlarged and rebuilt ALCATRAZ, to house Americas most ruthless and violent Offenders," he added. "We will no longer be held hostage to criminals, thugs, and Judges that are afraid to do their job and allow us to remove criminals, who came into our Country illegally. The reopening of ALCATRAZ will serve as a symbol of Law, Order, and JUSTICE."

(53,395 posts)Problem 1: it would cost more to revitalize Alcatraz to the point where inmates could live there than to build an entirely new prison. The place is worn out and the National Park Service does everything in its power to keep it looking just as it did on the last day of the Occupation of Alcatraz.
Problem 2: there isn't much "expanding" you could do. The island can't get any larger than it is.
Problem 3: the prison was extremely expensive to operate. EVERYTHING Alcatraz needed to operate, including water, had to be either moved to the prison by barge or, in the case of electricity, made on the island. The Bureau of Prisons closed the facility because you could house three mainland-facility inmates for less than housing one on Alcatraz.
Problem 4: the National Park Service and the tourism industry in San Francisco would shit themselves if Trump turned this place back into a prison.
Problem 5: If this happened WHERE THE HELL ARE WE GOING TO PUT TRUMP WHEN THE GOP GETS SICK OF HIS SHIT?
