Can somebody here tell me how you tariff a movie?

You asses the Tariff charge to who and where?

Let's say, for example, Paramount makes a movie in Australia. They sell the rights to Netflix. Netflix puts the movie on its platform and, as a subscriber, I watch it. Who the fuck pays the Tariff?

1. Well, what do you know? Trump is as ignorant about movies and their industry as he is about government.

2. In principle, Netflix is the importer, so they would pay the tariff.

The corporate structure of filmmaking is more complex than that, as each film project is a limited liability shell company and filming in that spans multiple countries is common. For example, Disney Star Wars streaming shows are substantially made in Britain under this model.

3. Doubt anyone in trump's admin has thought about how it would work. Here's a summary of what AI says:
Mon May 5, 2025, 09:20 AM
May 2025

"A tariff on movies, if imposed, would likely be levied on the value of the movie, potentially based on production costs or box office revenue, and could apply to both cinema releases and streaming content. Determining which countries would be subject to the tariff and how it would be collected, especially given the complexities of international co-productions, remains unclear."

Too much input/work from multiple countries (creatives love collaboration ... kumbaya!) and there’s no way to pinpoint which films are 100% from anywhere!

I assume, he plans or wants the same power to prevent foreign movies from being released in the US.

I just think he's a "mad king".

Canada the 51st state, invade Greenland, every country has been ripping us off for 40 years, yet we're the strongest country in the world. Alcatraz. On and on. Every day. Trump has been ranting like a lunatic.

You're correct. It's just that simple. He's nuts.

He's explained it over and over in great detail. She wiped the server with bleach.

Then she took a hammer to it.

Paramount gets a script idea from an Australian. An American writes the script, the Australian writes a second draft and then a Canadian and a Scot living in L.A. write the third draft. Main scenes are cast with three Americans, a Frenchman and a Welsh woman. Prinicipal photography takes place in Toronto. Parts of the set are constructed in Detroit and sent to a soundstage in Toronto. Second unit photograph takes place in London, England. Special effects are designed in Vancouver and animated in Seoul, Korea. Editing takes place in Northern California. Sound design is done in New Zealand and an orchestra is recorded in New York.

How do you tax that?

And then remembered "this is Donald" - and snapped back to reality.
Sorry, but I can't be expected to dissect the deranged drivel and drool 24/7.

(and I suppose I should appreciate the efforts of those that do - on some level ... but, have to confess ... )
