For decades the West of Canada has been squawking "secession"...
Unlike the US... there's actually a legal mechanism.

Albertans 'crushed' by Liberal election win rally to separate from Canada
Rally comes as Alberta government introduces legislation to lower the bar for holding referendums

Katheryn Speck said she used to be a Canadian nationalist, travelled the world with a maple leaf on her backpack and once lived in Quebec so she could become fluently bilingual. But on Saturday she was among hundreds of people who rallied at the Alberta Legislature to support separation from Canada, with many in the crowd waving Alberta flags and a few even displaying the U.S. Stars and Stripes.
"I thought it was a beautiful, fantastic country. But now I'm so disappointed. I'm literally crushed that we'll never be represented in this country and there's never a chance of changing the government," Speck said.
Earlier this week, Premier Danielle Smith's government proposed legislation that would lower the bar for holding a referendum.
What a State it'd be... the size of MT, WY and ID combined... if the people of Alberta do it LEGALLY... I'd be all in favor.

Smith is a dimwit winger and has limited influence in such matters even if she is Premier.

(2,248 posts)of secession. And theyd lose the federal land and would have to make deals with the indigenous peoples. Then the Parliament would have to produce actual legislation and vote to confirm. Do we think all of that would really happen?

Separatism is as much a fantasy for Albertans as secession is for neo-confederates in the US.
Smith is a lunatic.
Its not going to happen.

(6,570 posts)I do wish DUers would stop with the repugnant speculation & pontification about Canada/Alberta becoming a state.
I live in Alberta and, if Albertans decided to join the US, I would move to some other province. If Canadians decided to join the US, I would emigrate to the UK or perhaps a European country.

(15,597 posts)For "Freedom" back when it wasn't too much of a problem to fall in with a culty or clannish ranch town out in the frontier, find a useful job, and apply to be a Canadian citizen.
Especially if you claimed to be a relative of someone who did the same back in the 1960's when a lot of anti-government FLDS Mormons fled to Canada to avoid both the Civil Rights movement and the War.
Alberta was resource rich and population poor back then, much like Idaho or Wyoming.
