This line from the first book in The Narnia Series : "The Magician's Nephew" in which Digory says to his uncle Andrew: "Very well. I'll go. But there is one thing I jolly well mean to say first. I didn't believe in Magic till today. I see now it's real. Well if it is, I suppose all the old fairy tales are more or less true. And you're simply a wicked, cruel magician like the ones in the stories. Well, I've never read a story in which people of that sort weren't paid out in the end, and I bet you will be. And serve you right."
It came up because someone was comparing the AI image of T as a pope with Shift the Ape in the last book of the series entitled "The Last Battle"
I don't know, personally, I do not believe that it is possible to be a united states anymore. And who will ever go to work for the Federal Government again after all this terrorism to employees? And top scientists are moving thanks to the "Cultural revolution" instigated by the tech bros.....
The hubris of those in urban areas ignoring the propaganda from Limbaugh onwards for 40 years now- two generations- got us into this spot. I cannot see how we get out of it without simply becoming separate nations.
Hoping sincerely to be wrong.

(10,682 posts)This will be a land mass of shared borders and no shared values. Within 5 years, the liberal states will form alliances and relationships with Canada and Europe and Japan and the conservative states will become Haiti. The only issues holding this up from happening now are the securitization of the nuclear arsenal and the establishment of contiuous borders - for instance, the liberal states will have to take over a narrow but long swath of land from North Dakota, across Montana and all the way to the Puget Sound. There will also need to be access to the port of New Orleans and the Mississippi-Missouri River system as well.
I am not kidding or being hypderbolic. I have already drawn maps in my head that lead to a partioning of the states (and greater cooperation with Mexico and Canada for the Pacific coast and southern border regions; with alliances with Greenland/Denmark/Canada and the EU for the Atlantic Coast down to Washington D.C.). Trump and his morons can have the Gulf of Mexico coasts and rot in them.
The other partitioning would involve splitting the coasts and the Great Lakes regions off and result in a Balkanization of the continent that would likely result in constant proxy wars for a few decades, or until the Neo-Confederacy runs out of money and people.
It is going to happen. The question is when and how. Peacefully seems unlikely, but would be better in the end for the planet and the people of each region. Eventually, Donald Trump will be known and remembered in history as the most hated man of the 21st century, sidling up next to Hitler and Napoleon...which is why I will choose to teach the opposite side and denigrate Trump as an ill-tempered fool who lied and stole until he was eventually killed by his own one time fans.

(67,213 posts)I've been thinking about this, too.
Looking at a map of the states that voted for Harris in 2024, it's very easy to imagine the U.S. splitting up.
In the age of the internet, virtual meetings, work from home, etc., geographic continuity might not be essential. It would be challenging to overcome but not impossible.

(10,682 posts)Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England as a model?
I don't much care because I know my choice will be ideological and not geographical regardless, but I'd like to see contiguous borders where possible. I also want a wall - not around US, around THEM to keep them IN their chosen hellhole. Once partition is achieved, the Reformed States of America should simply refuse to deal with the Confederate States of America in any exchanges at all. I don't want them around, I don't want to see them, hear them (unless its to laugh at their starvation and wailing), or speak to them (unless its to hear them apologize and beg for forgiveness - which will not be granted).
The tools and imbeciles that support Trump and the destruction of the Post-WWII order are scum and deserve outright blame and eternal condemnation for the results of their actions and gullability. Fuck them all, let them rot for all I care....just secure the nukes first.

(67,213 posts)Lewis showed how easy it was to fool most of the country's residents with a Big Lie. A few evildoers were in on the lie, but most of the people of Narnia were genuinely fooled and perplexed.
Also, the Big Lie was designed to give the country and its riches to outsiders, who helped facilitate the Big Lie.
In the end, the country was destroyed and replaced with something better. Most people wanted the better, kinder place but a few would not allow themselves to believe the truth, at all.
