"Donald Trumps war on everything halfway good and decent continues apace, with the gratuitous cancellation of an Education Department grant that funds childrens educational programming on PBS. Thatll save $23 million that can now go to about a minute and a half of tax cuts for billionaires, or a month or so of Donald Trumps golfing trips. (Haha, stupid libs! Complaining about the millions of dollars his golfing costs is so 2017! Everyones fine with it now, get some new material!)
Did anyone really vote for this? We dont remember Trump promising during the campaign that hed gut childrens programming on public TV; maybe it slipped in there somewhere between the shark-or-electric-boat musings and the weird dancing. Still, itll probably win some support from the Usual Gang of Shitheads who think trolling is the entire purpose of government, i.e., the entire Republican Party.
The Corporation for Public Broadcasting said yesterday that it was informed of the cancellation of the Ready to Learn grant Friday. The grant has funded PBS Kids programming for preschool and early elementary kids, including Lyla in the Loop, Work It Out Wombats! and Molly of Denali. The main characters in the two non-wombat shows are little girls of color, which may have had something to do with the defunding. For all we know, somebody at Education may have thought Molly of Denali was a sneaky attempt to violate Trumps renaming of that Alaskan mountain to Mt. McKinley, although the show debuted in 2019."

(26,912 posts)Its not beg week anymore..its gotta be a monthly contribution from viewers to keep the programming and its so worth keeping. The budgets allocated for PBS n NPR is so minuscule, it makes no sense to cut it for the value it brings.

Unlike Mitt, I loathe Sesame Street. It bears primary responsibility for what the Canadian blogger Binky calls the de-monsterization of childhood the idea that there are no evil monsters out there at the edges of the map, just shaggy creatures who look a little funny and can sometimes be a bit grouchy about it because people prejudge them until they learn to celebrate diversity and help Cranky the Friendly Monster go recycling. That is not unrelated to the infantilization of our society. Marinate three generations of Americans in that pabulum and its no surprise you wind up with unprotected diplomats dragged to their deaths from their safe house in Benghazi. Or as J. Scott Gration, the presidents special envoy to Sudan, said in 2009, in the most explicit Sesamization of American foreign policy: Weve got to think about giving out cookies. Kids, countries they react to gold stars, smiley faces, handshakes . . . The butchers of Darfur arent blood-drenched machete-wielding genocidal killers but just Cookie Monsters whom we havent given enough cookies. Im not saying theres a direct line between Bert & Ernie and Barack & Hillary . . . well, actually I am.
