Donald Trump pisses in the FIFA World Cup

"It looks just like my Gold toilet."

‘They’ll have to go home’: Trump’s World Cup taskforce dismisses fears but warns visitors

US president Donald Trump convened the first meeting of his administration’s 2026 World Cup taskforce on Tuesday in a public event in which he revealed that he did not know Russia had been banned from Fifa competitions and insisted the tournament would go off without a hitch.

Boasting repeatedly that the 2026 World Cup, due to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the “biggest, safest and most extraordinary soccer tournament in history”, Trump went on to claim that the tournament would generate “tens of billions of dollars in economic activities for local businesses” and “thousands and thousands of jobs for American workers”.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino, sitting next to Trump in front of the trophy for this year’s Club World Cup, later put specific numbers to those benefits: $50bn in economic output and almost 300,000 jobs as a result of this year’s tournament and next year’s showpiece occasion.

Numerous doubts have been raised over the last year about the United States’ ability to smoothly host the 2026 tournament. In particular, the government must process a very large number of visas for the foreign visitors expected to visit the United States in time for the competition, with wait time for some extending for a year or longer.

They couldn't change it from Qatar when they lied about serving alcohol in the venues (although I don't think it should have been awarded to Qatar to begin with).

It would be funny if they switched it to Canada.

Canada and Mexico are also hosting matches. Move them all to Mexico and Canada. Football fans will be happy.

and those would have to replace 11 US stadiums.

FIFA has had strict stadium guideline requirements since at least 2001. Stadiums must have a capacity of at least 40,000, stadiums hosting quarter-finals or semi-finals must have a minimum of 60,000 and those hosting the opening ceremony or final must have a capacity of at least 80,000.
...
On 16 June 2022, FIFA selected 16 venues to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup (two in Canada, three in Mexico and 11 in the United States).

Mexico's largest is big enough for the final, but none of the others in Mexico or Canada are big enough for quarter or semi-finals (though they could have used Mexico City's stadium for any of quarter-, semi- or the final, they're not). Moving it to just Mexico and Canada would mean many fewer fans in the stadiums, and probably over-use of the pitches.

This one makes them the country that will have hosted the most ever - 3.

which works out as 72 group matches, and 32 in the knockout stage. Basically you need twice as many stadiums as before. I looked up how many matches some venues are hosting, and the largest seems to be in Arlington, Texas, which will host 9 matches in a month. That's already a lot (I wonder if they'll swap the entire turf at some point - some stadiums are built so you can do that quickly).

Practically, it's too late to leave the USA out; there will be contracts with the cities already signed, and it would cost FIFA billions to pull out of them. And then they'd have to play in stadiums half the size. Infantino doesn't give a stuff about fans getting arrested at US borders; he organizes spectacle for TV rights, and advertising opportunities. That means he wants large stadiums, in places where the richest fans can spend a lot of money on high-end hotels and so on.
