(1,786 posts)And came out with simple robes and a stole. His crucifix is interesting too. Francis used the bent cross which some fine disrespectful. He did not continue it but the one he chose has the Christ is a similar if somewhat less graphic position.

(1,786 posts)The poor, the worker, the hungry, and the sick. This corruption of Catholicism to these Traditional types is grotesque.
It is fueled largely by Catholic converts and therein lies the problem. Cradle Catholics believe that by our works shall they know us amd that salvation is earned.
Protestant teachings are sola fidelis and works have no place in it. Catholics LIVE their faith, Protestants talk about it.
Remember that the Church is conservative by nature and some things will NEVER happen. Women will never be ordained and no Pope has the authority to change that - for it is Sacred Tradition. The Church is never going to marry gay people. The Church is never going to be pro-choice.
However, I dont split. I can see shades of grey. I do not believe in allowing the Perfect to be the enemy of the Good. 1.3 Billion Catholics focused on social and economic and environmental justice is good enough for me. It beats the hell out of the traditional Catholics lamenting the days of the High Altar and Later in Mass. Prevost will be conservative with compassion and if he focuses on social justice more so than the morality wars - its a win!

(3,483 posts)He was just chosen by his fellows to fulfill a heavy responsibility and, after Francis, to fill some mighty large shoes.
Immediately after being elected, the new Pope dons his vestments in a room near where the vote took place. That room is known in the Vatican as the "Room of Tears". They call it that because many newly elected Popes weep while preparing themselves to be the leader of the Catholic Church. Imagine standing in that room and putting on those vestments, knowing that you're now the spiritual leader of 1.4 billion people around the world, that your words and actions really matter to them.
I can only imagine the sense of weight and responsibility must seem crushing, quite apart from the religiosity of the moment for an ardent Catholic. Catholics believe, after all, that the papacy is an unbroken (more or less) line of authority stretching back to Peter, who walked with Jesus.
Small wonder, then, that a new Pope might need some time to prepare himself to face the world.
