President Donald Trump on Thursday night announced that he plans to appoint Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as interim U.S. attorney for Washington, D.C., calling her "incredibly well qualified for this position" and "in a class by herself."

Trump made the announcement on his social media platform Truth Social, mentioning Pirro's prior roles as a prosecutor and judge, and mentioning that Pirro was "currently Co-Host of The Five, one of the Highest Rated Shows on Television."

Trump had been strongly considering the appointment, a source familiar with his thinking told NBC News earlier on Thursday.
