Newark, N.J. Mayor Ras Baraka Released After Being Arrested by Federal Police at ICE Detention Center

Baraka was arrested outside of Delaney Hall on Friday, May 9

By Charmaine Patterson Updated on May 9, 2025 08:40PM EDT

Newark, N.J., Mayor Ras Baraka has been released from custody, per multiple reports.

Baraka was charged with trespassing and released around 8 p.m. local time, according to Pix 11, citing officials.

Baraka was arrested outside of Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention center, on Friday, May 9. Baraka had been protesting the facility's opening this week, claiming it was not being run legally.

Alina Habba, interim U.S. attorney for New Jersey, confirmed Baraka's arrest on X Friday, writing, "The Mayor of Newark, Ras Baraka, committed trespass and ignored multiple warnings from Homeland Security Investigations to remove himself from the ICE detention center in Newark, New Jersey this afternoon."

He is testing his boundaries and Congress has the authority to end habeas corpus, not miller.

When federal officials blocked his entry, a heated argument broke out, according to Viri Martinez, an activist with the New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice. It continued even after Baraka returned to the public side of the gates.

“They arrived, explained to the guards and the officials at the facility that they were there to exercise their oversight authority,” he said, adding that they were allowed to enter and inspect the center sometime between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

so glad he was released, Thank Goodness. Those 2 Democratic Representatives (I think) were assaulted by those so-called ICE agents too. Disgusting.
