However, people are free to call me that all they like. I just consider it an indicator of the type of person I'm dealing with. I feel no need to get upset or retaliate as I consider myself above such petty name-calling. It's childish and shows a lack of impulse control. The only thing accomplished is the degradation of my respect for the person doing it.

Mon May 12, 2025, 10:22 AM
May 2025

As a white guy, for whatever problems I have, I have it easier in our society than anyone else with the same problems but are a minority or a woman due to our social structures. So while I find Crockett's language needlessly poor, I have the luxury of being able to ignore it. I do put it down as a poor choice on her part. There's just no need to phrase it so derisively.

But that said, there is a tendency towards the perceived "safe" choice as if every choice isn't risky. Because up until 2008, it was a given that nominating a black guy wasn't a viable choice. People told same sex marriage advocates to hold off because Republicans used same sex marriage bans to drive turnout and it turns out once the courts forced the issue people were fine with it. Or the opposite when courts forced school desegregation a lot of white people lost their minds. Every choice has risks.

And the perceived safe choice of Biden in 2012 accidentally (or otherwise) pushed Obama on same sex marriage and in 2020 said he would have a minority or a woman as his running mate. Neither of those fit the safe mold that Biden was thought to represent.

Is Adam Schiff a "white boy"?

Is Jamie Raskin a "white boy"?

Is Eric Swalwell a "white boy"?

Is Chris Murphy a "white boy"?

Is Mark Kelly a "white boy"?

These men deserve respect, especially from other Democrats.

Edited to add: I am a white woman, and I am deeply disappointed that neither Hillary Clinton nor Kamala Harris were elected. They were both spectacular, well qualified candidates. I now know that there may not be a female president in my lifetime.

But I can still get behind a qualified white male candidate (like any of the ones I have listed here) and not do so grudgingly. And I really don't want to see anyone in the party disrespected for their racial identity, whatever that is.

Jasmine Crockett is not running for President. As Jasmine Crockett stated the consensus, particularly among donors, is that the candidate needs to be a white male. She's not wrong. That's the consensus I'm hearing too. Just like it was the consensus in 2020.

Some are offended because she said "boy" not "male" or "man". But her statement is still correct.

May 2025

The context of her remark (that Dems lost 2 out of the last 3 presidential elections, and the only time we won was with a white male candidate) is very pertinent, imo.

Reading the rest of her comments in the article, it sounds like she was a little exasperated about people wanting to play extra safe with the choice of a 2028 candidate. If she was ridculing anyone or anything, I think it was those who she felt were being overly cautious, not any particular white man or white men as a group. I can understand her feeling that way, while also understanding the caution many Dems are feeling right now.

As much as I want to see a woman president in my lifetime, I can't blame anyone for feeling that a white male would be a safer choice for 2028. I will support whoever the party ends up nominating at the 2028 convention, regardless of race or gender, but above all else, I do hope we can choose someone who will WIN.

Calling a white male a "white boy" has a certain derogatory connotation to it, but it's not as loaded as calling a black man a "boy". The connotation there is very much uglier. Neither is classy, though, for sure. She could have made her point in a better way.

That said, I get her frustration, to a point. At the same time, I feel her choice of target is misplaced. The reality is that the electorate isn't likely to widely embrace a minority candidate at this moment in time. Yeah yeah, Obama won twice, but Obama is the kind of candidate who comes along once in a generation and whose appeal is difficult or impossible to replicate.

It's not the Democratic Party's fault that this is the reality we're operating in, and refusing to recognize that reality undermines our ability to change things. We can't advance our agenda if we can't win, and we can't win if we're not putting up candidates suited to the reality of the electorate.

It's unfortunate, but no less true for that. It's really just that simple. In another 10-20 years things might be different, but right now this is where we are.

If a term is meant to belittle another person or group, then that's what it means. Calling white men boys is a way of belittling them and saying they are only in office because they are entitled. But that is not necessarily the case. Some of them are among the best our society has to offer.

Whoever our next presidential candidate is, you can be sure it won't be someone who throws around expressions like "white boy".

Truly, I get what you're saying. We can't decry demeaning language like racial slurs against marginalized groups and then turn a blind eye when such language is directed towards a dominant group. It's either not okay entirely or it's okay entirely. I don't care for "situational ethics" when it comes to bigotry and prejudice, and yet some on the left will tell you that it's impossible to be racist towards white people.

And I don't find Cockett's remark at all offensive. It's not the most tactful thing she could have said, but definitely not worthy of all the pearl clutching I'm seeing here.

If anyone here feels personally wounded by that comment, I think their reaction says more about them than it does about Crockett.

P.S. For the record, Jasmine Crockett can call me a "white girl" any time she wants.

I wouldn't bother being offended. It feels more like punching up than punching down. Hearing people called "illegal" really bothers me. I also detest when the news says "workers died..." when referring to people who died on the job.

When I think about generation after generation of people going back hundreds of years hearing racial slurs in their own free and equal country, their children and parents and grandparents and anyone else who looks like them, it's easy to understand tossing one back.

That's just how I feel, one old white girl from what I affectionately call "white land", where 96.7% self declared white on the last census just isn't white enough for them. And my kid's old high-school had a problem with a Trans kid a few years ago, what a way to make the news. Bigots are comfortable here.

I do have to smile at the idea of an older black woman calling out a younger black female politician for it. I think it must be hard for her, because the Maga are so toxic and crude and she's a big target. They can make you lose your self respect. Our grannies would have rebuked us in the strongest way and then would have gone to church to pray for our salvation. That was considered vulgar in the negro community and would have been considered low class. There is no word to call white men that is the equivalent of the n word, it is designed to demean and steal your dignity, it also silences you. When we find a word like that to have the same result with privileged males I will feel their pain.

And that’s exactly what has to happen. This country isn’t mature enough to vote for a woman, a black woman, a gay guy or any minority.

Barack Obama was a generational political talent. We’re not going to see his like again for some time. And he also happened to come in at exactly the right time. ANY Democrat would have won after what W did to the country. Even Hillary Clinton.

It would never get touched on here. And as a gay white man, I'm probably not the person to do the touching. You'd definitely be better positioned than I to open that can of worms.

I'll merely observe from my own perch how interesting it would be if Pete Buttigieg suddenly yassified and started snapping around with a slay queen persona. I think we'd all find that highly strange. But Crockett's persona is taken for granted. An almost "Well of course she sounds like this." And it feels like that says something, although it would take some articulation to dig into all the issues surrounding it.

Tangentially, I do find it genuinely funny that a lot of the slang, attitude, and social shorthand in younger generations is now borrowing heavily from Ru Paul's Drag Race. (Which, as we both know, is a milieu that grew out of Black ballroom culture of the 70s and 80s, but the show's popularity on social media seems to have popularized it and disseminated it more broadly. When my 15 year old niece used "snatched" in a sentence, I had to do a double take).

words and terms that are not taken as offensive by any other person from any given background, socioeconomic level, and education level is insane and completely self-defeating. Without even knowing it, each and every one of us has said something offensive to someone else. That is the nature of language and linguistics. If what we want is a world where every thought must be conveyed through some Babel Fish AI to retranslate anything that would be considered offensive to the person hearing or reading it then let's just continue being constantly offended. Otherwise, let's give people the benefit of the doubt unless it is patently obvious they do not deserve it. This does not appear to me to be one of those cases.

We are getting ready to have medicaid ripped away from Americans who really need it - and between this and the proper use of the word 'bitch' - people are focusing on what words we use.

This is why we lose. But she's right at the core message. I know there is a segment of voters that are fawning all over AOC or even Crockett to be a candidate -

But we need a plain old white guy (is guy offensive?) in 2028.

Black women are not willing to give the 'others' another win. It's a matter of the RIGHT white guy who will throw off the old politics of respectability and shove down voices shouting "come together" and just get out of the way of the People punishing the Others. It's that simple.

Barack Obama was hobbled by his race and message of hope.

If we want truth, reconciliation, trials, imprisonment etc. etc. we need a white man who can strike FEAR into us of what is coming if we don't vote for him. The shiniest happiest ones I can think of our Gov Pritzker and Sec Buttigieg. That's a zero fucks to give team.

And neither one will 'tone police' our Reps and Senators

Democrats need to stop trying to make them act right. They won't. They have no reason to and we have no reason to try to cajole them into trying just one little moment of being a decent human. That ship sailed with Newt Gingrich and it's not coming back. They are not our "friends across the aisle".

So, instead of bringing a casserole (or hot dish, yes, someone recently got angry with me for saying casserole instead of hot dish....see, people can be offended by ANYTHING) to a partisan fight, maybe they can just once, bring a sharp tongue and a no-more-nonsense attitude.

Mon May 12, 2025, 02:49 PM

For example, two women (or two gay men) who are friends who refer to each as "gurl" to express that friendship - not offensive.

A man in an office calling a female coworker a "girl" to diminish her accomplishment and sexually objectify her - offensive.

A white police officer calling a black man a "boy" to assert his power over him in a context in which for hundreds of years white slave owners used that term to do the same thing - offensive.

The white equivalent? Can't really think of it because, you know, not that context.

Jasmin Crockett making a mild joke about how systemic racism and misogyny means our best option in 2028 is probably a white man (and using the term "boy" to soften that pretty grim reality) - not really that offensive

The fact that she's probably right - pretty offensive.

If I was going to choose where I wanted to put my time and energy over the next couple years, it would probably be on that last thing.

Racism does not "go both ways," despite the right wingers insisting that it does.

The interview was on Sirius XM's Urban View. She was speaking directly with her people. "White boy," in the context that she used it, was not meant to be taken literally, and there wouldn't be any confusion from listeners on that point. She was using vernacular to emphasize a point and what that often looks like is saying things in a country/southern way.

That said, over the past few months, Rep Crockett's name recognition has skyrocketed and folks are breathlessly reporting everything she says. Some minor tweaking might be needed to make sure her message is understood by a wider audience, or at least understood by everyone under the democratic tent.

And I totally get the difference when it's a white man using it to insult and denigrate black males.

Liberals need to grow thicker skins and learn more tolerance.

I'm with Jasmine Crockett on this one.

or FAUX News? Sounds more like something they would do on FAUX to attack a woman of color.

This thread is an eye-opener, and not in a good way. Very disappointing.
