(24,486 posts)but we never raised our hands and had pretty ordinary conversations that you wouldn't hear unless you were trying to listen in on it. They were good people because they would help anyone in need without demanding to know if the person was a believer or not, but to be a good witness for Jesus and have a chance to witness. There are all kinds of religious people.
I am an atheist now but I've read the entire Bible several times and studied it in its original languages.

(1,742 posts)Was forced to go to church at times (got tired of arguing), waving hands, stumbling about, collapsed on the floor in spasms, speaking in tongues. Ex said, it's in the Bible. I said it sure was. Someone who understands the passage should explain what it actually meant.
People can call themselves "Christian" all they want. When they are going against Christ's teachings, they are liars and hypocrites. The one sin God can not forgive? Hypocrisy. Because the hypocrites don't believe they've sinned, and thus can't ask for forgiveness.

(24,486 posts)go to church because there were too many hypocrites. The preacher said he told him, "Well come right in, one more wouldn't make any difference."
The Bible says that the unforgivable sin is blasphemy against the Holy Spirit.
Even a hypocrite can have a moment of contrition and ask for forgiveness.

(24,486 posts)and came out the other side an atheist.
The last 2 years before I retired I worked at the Salvation Army as a custodian. In my interview I did mention a passage in Matthew. A month after I had been working I told my supervisor with whom I worked closely that I was an atheist (he is a strong Baptist). You could have knocked him over with a feather because based upon how I treated people there, the clients and homeless, he assumed I was a Christian. But what surprised me the most is that he respected my decision and promised he would never try and witness to me or to get me to come back into the fold, and he didn't.
As an atheist, I do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. There is much of what Jesus says and teaches that is admirable and would make a good philosophy. Even in the Old Testament there are things like a concern or for animals or an admonition to treat strangers well because the Jews were once strangers in a strange land themselves.

(2,988 posts)I attended a well-known, very liberal Methodist university in central Illinois. Needless to say, religion classes were part of the curriculum, but with students of every faith (or none) from all over the world, there were some special courses. Two were my favorites: a history of Buddhism and an in-depth study of the Bible as a document. That latter was taught by a Rabbi and members of the Greek and Latin languages faculty. That sort of thing will turn anyone into an atheist or agnostic.

I always have to look up the 31-46 part as I am no biblical scholar. Not even close. I think this is one of the few sections worth remembering and acting on.

(5,955 posts)And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.
All they have is their vanity and their self-righteousness.
They do not know Jesus or what it means to be moral, compassionate and honest.

(24 posts)You might try a call back prayer to the teachings of not just Jesus, but the Old Testament, too? So in everything, do unto others what you would have them do unto you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 7:12 is easier to remember than the Leviticus verse because Matthew 7: 12 can be summed up by praying for all of us to remember The Golden Rule.

(24,486 posts)It seems that their conversation was one overheard by the OP who was sitting close to them, not that they were preaching to the restaurant. If they had been eating quietly nearby and heard you talking about whatever it was that they seriously disagreed to hearing would it them be ok for them to call you out?
A simple suggestion which I have read would simply to be asked to be moved elsewhere if possible.

(19,950 posts)persecuted if you say anything. I used to work with a Pentacostal preacher and he was one of the meanest people I ever knew. Boy did he hate Catholics.
I got him. One morning I told him about the Sisters of Mercy here in KCMO. They were all medical people and they went out at night to houses where family members needed 24 hour care and spent the night so the family could sleep.
He had a severely disabled daughter that needed 24 hour care so he recognized what a wonderful service this was. He even
admitted that it was a really nice thing to do. He had the strangest look on his face.
