F.D.A. Approves Novavax Covid Vaccine With Stricter New Conditions
The agency narrowed who can get the shot and added new study requirements that could cost the company tens of millions.
The Food and Drug Administration on Friday approved the Novavax Covid-19 vaccine, but only for older adults and for others over age 12 who have at least one medical condition that puts them at high risk from Covid.
Scientific advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who typically make decisions on who should get approved shots and when, have been debating whether to recommend Covid shots only to the most vulnerable Americans. The F.D.A.s decision appeared to render at least part of their discussion moot.
The new restriction will sharply limit access to the Novavax vaccine for people under 65 who are in good health. It may leave Americans who do not have underlying conditions at risk if a more virulent version of the coronavirus were to emerge. It could also limit options for people who want the vaccine for a wide array of reasons, including to protect a vulnerable loved one.
The vaccine had previously been authorized under emergency use. Covid vaccines developed by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna, which are more widely used by Americans, were granted full approval in 2022. However, the companies are working on updated shots for the fall, and the new restrictions on the Novavax shot portend a more restrictive approach from the F.D.A.

I think this was aimed at a younger audience but it made an impression on me. If anyone remembers its name, please let me know.

(8,103 posts)I think about my diligent mother, who stood me in lines to get the shots I needed, and the sugar cubes, to prevent a catastrophe. Because of her, my MMR titers have been good all this time, and I am part of the old school, who knew what to do and did it, no matter how tired they were.
Bob is a buffoon, period. He said recently, "don't follow my advice." He wants to tear apart our health system, but not take responsibility for what he is doing. Trump, who famously said he would let the Secretary do whatever he wanted, apparently independently, also wants to avoid responsibility for the peril we are in. These men own whatever happens to us. It will be THEIR FAULT. This behavior is worthy of prison for a long, long time.
So, they are destroying all our cancer research, and preventing us from getting vaccinated--but they run to safety whenever they themselves are threatened with illness. Their loved ones, not ours, protected. This is like a nightmare you can't wake up from.
Viruses are indiscriminate. They get anyone who comes up in the line. They don't care what politics you follow. Talk about a swamp. I think I am going to stockpile masks while I can. They cannot regulate my behavior. At least, not for now.
I am profoundly sad when I think of all the fine cancer research destroyed by the policies of Donald Trump. There is a special place in hell for him. An ignoramus, fat, weak and dumber than anyone we have ever had as President. When he is finally gone, and they pull down the statues he erected to himself, all his portraits and tributes, I will be celebrating in my own style, and watching the fireworks display, heralding our new future. Until then, we have to hold on.

A new FDA mandate on Covid boosters means it could be nearly impossible for Pfizer or Moderna to complete new trials in time for the fall season.

In briefing documents published earlier Tuesday, FDA staff wrote that updating the vaccines to more closely match currently circulating strains may provide added benefit in anticipation of an uptick in cases during the fall and winter.
The change means it will be near impossible for Pfizer and Moderna to complete the new trials in time for the fall season. Aside from running the trials, the drugmakers will still need to design the trials and enroll participants, which can also take several weeks or months.
The data would then need to be analyzed and signed off by the FDA.
I am over 65 and I am clearly high risk with COPD. I am worried that there will be no updated vaccine for any new variations this fall.
