BOULDER, Colo. (AP) A man with a makeshift flamethrower yelled Free Palestine and hurled an incendiary device into a group that had assembled to raise attention for Israeli hostages in Gaza, law enforcement officials said Sunday. Eight people were injured, some with burns.
The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, was booked into the Boulder County jail north of Denver and expected to face charges in connection with the attack the FBI was investigating as a terrorist act. Online records did not immediately show when he would make a court appearance.
The burst of violence at the popular Pearl Street pedestrian mall, a four-block area in downtown Boulder, unfolded against the backdrop of a war between Israel and Hamas that continues to inflame global tensions and has contributed to a spike in antisemitic violence in the United States. The attack happened on the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, which is marked with the reading of the Torah and barely a week after a man who also yelled Free Palestine was charged with fatally shooting two Israeli embassy staffers outside of a Jewish museum in Washington.
snip=============================
The attack occurred as people with a volunteer group called Run For Their Lives was concluding their weekly demonstration to raise visibility for the hostages who remain in Gaza. Video from the scene shows a witness shouting, Hes right there. Hes throwing Molotov cocktails, as a police officer with his gun drawn advances on a bare-chested suspect who is holding containers in each hand.

(13,850 posts)and this and the murder of the Israeli diplomats outside of the jewish center in DC should be wakeup calls to the anti-semitic radicalization that's underfoot.
We need to shut it down.

(1,957 posts)It hasn't been confirmed yet, so maybe the charges are premature, but I would assume not.
It's sad that parts of our society have such anger/racism that they think this sort of attack is acceptable.

(73,801 posts)bad actors jumped on it to defeat biden. those campus protests were never organic, as many here saw clearly. but somehow, that was never news.
pics purporting to b from gaza have turned out to b from sudan. starving children is just a new spin on an old blood libel. the part where hamas is messing w the aid that does get through, making ppl pay for food, stealing it for themselves, their soldiers- never talked about. headlines about bombing schools and hospitals, w nary a word about the arms caches kept there. sadly, i cd go on.
it saddens me the extent to which this propaganda has been swallowed whole here. i so rarely see anyone even talk about hamas, or where these lies r coming from. there rly r 2 sides to this story, but only 1 seems to b told, even here.
im not saying israel is the good guy here, that nothing theyre doing is wrong. i hope to see bibi in the dock at the icc b4 i die, or he does. but hamas is a terrorist org, they have kept the ppl of gaza on the brink of starvation for YEARS. they have built military infrastructure w money meant for human infrastructure. and from the river to the sea IS a call for the death of jews.
they cd end this tomorrow. but they dont want peace.
and now its come here. shame on us.
