Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMusk's just fucking carpet bombing Twitter. It's gonna be counter-productive for me to do a blow-by- blow.
He's really just calling Trump's bluff on the threat to terminate his grants and contracts. I don't believe he's taunted him with "TACO" yet, even thought the Epstein tweets are multiplying rapidly.
If Trump DOES TAKE ACTION against Musk and hurts him financially, Musk WILL retaliate. It's just a matter of how effectively.

(42,660 posts)We'll all be incredibly rich!
We the people pay the tariffs.
For many years the Repudiates have been trying to get rid of the income tax and shift to the sales tax, which is more of a burden to poor people since we pay a larger percentage of our available income to sales tax.
Finally, they found out we were wise to that trick, so tariffs are replacing that CON.
FRUMPIES DREAM was to replace the income tax with the tariffs to achieve the same outcome as the sales tax scheme. Hopefully, people are wise to that. Sales tax=tariffs=sales tax.

(23,633 posts)Surely most of his wealth is tied up in Tesla and SpaceX shares. If those companies tank, he loses a massive chunk of his fortune. He'll still have his propaganda platform, but without his vast fortune he will be far less powerful.
On the other hand, that propaganda platform does have massive reach. How hard will it be for Musk to convince Republicans to ditch Trump and replace him with Vance?

(2,173 posts)It rides on what level of provable dirt Musk has on Trump et al, and if he has the guts to release it. It's quite possible that Musk can make the whole house of cards implode by targeting a whole host of interlocking people in this mess. This has to go quite deep I would imagine.

(23,281 posts)...so he also will know how to push Trump over the edge into full-blown rage and insanity.
There are only two reasons why this would not happen.
1). Musk knows how far he can push him and decides not to land that one last "body blow," OR...
2). Trump's goons stage an intervention, take his phone away, and have someone watch him 24/7.
I see the success rate of option 2 being somewhere around "0."

Realize the Epstein accusations are nothing new, and Trump doesn't care, just as he raped E Jean Carroll, and doesn't care about that.
Musk would have to have the actual "Epstein Files" in his possession, and he'd have to release them, unredacted, or Musk's entire line of attack will become a nothingburger, period.
We've been doing this dance for a decade, all the way back to the Access Hollywood tape. For reasons unknown, he gets a free pass in that area of his life, even if some of the events involved pre-teen girls. And Bondi is NOT sitting on that report because there's nothing in it.

(76,706 posts)Tesla shares are only around 25% of Melon's total. (13% of $840 billion or about $109 billion.)
Of course, his net worth includes $44 billion for Twitter, when it was worth about 20% of that. So, there's one inflation point.
SpaceX is a different matter. It's market cap is over $400 billion & he owns 42%. So, $168 billion.
So, we're at $322 billion, out of around $420 billion.
If those tank there is still potentially $100 billion left over. Not exactly GoFundMe time.
Of course, I can't attest to how fragile the other $100 billion is.
If Tesla & SX tank, it could take other investments with it.

Im on board with Elon here. Trump is growing our debt which is sinking our country. So Trump lashes out on Musk but Musk does not care!
Cirsium
(3,943 posts)Government is not a business. "Our debt is sinking our country" is a right wing talking point. The right wingers are the ones sinking our country.
Melon
(1,525 posts)They are growing our debt. Its common sense. And fundamentals of business apply. Creating a debt spiral of ever increasing debt payments has to end somewhere, and its not good, for any party. I will support any democrat over all else that pays down our debt. My childrens future is whats important to me.
Cirsium
(3,943 posts)The debt being a threat to your childrens future is exactly the right wing talking point, and it has been for a long time. The "fundamentals of business" do not apply. It ends when the wealthy are taxed. The Republicans say it ends when the government stops providing services. Pick one.
Melon
(1,525 posts)Its not sustainable in my opinion either. You cant just tax your way out of overspending. Whats the next lever? I believe that the budget needs to be balanced. You have to balance the spending with the income, which means some spending needs to be cut until the debt level is lowered. With lowered interest payments, more money can go towards services. Im not republican. My circle is not either and have the same beliefs. Clinton had a balanced budget.
Cirsium
(3,943 posts)Problem solved.
Here you are saying spending needs to be cut.

misanthrope
(9,495 posts)Musk's broad statement is fashioned to mean different things to different people. If you're prone to conspiracies, then it means he manipulated tabulations. If you're not, it can mean he is referencing his $200 million spent and his strategic advice on shaping messaging.
As far as being smoke to a fire, not really.
questionseverything
(11,841 posts)So if I am prone to conspiracy theories and a billionaire says, the president wouldnt of won w/o me and we wouldnt have the house and
We would only have 51 senate seats not the 54 we have now
That is weirdly specific and since I know there are 4 states that have an odd vote proportion from pres race to senate race
So yes I believe him
But all we have to do is hand count those ballots and we would know
I find it hysterical that people would rather lose our democracy to *rump instead of hand counting the ballots because they need proof of bad actions before they can look for proof of bad actions

I didn't believe he "left" anything. I believed he took a lower profile in the media because whether he liked it or not, he realized he couldn't get away with the "In the headlines 7 days a week" thing that Trump did. People don't like him. He sort of admitted it AND made excuses for it all at the same time.
