Musk was always planning to leave after what, 100 days or so? Rump gives musk a gold key to Washington. Then, musk is out, and within 24-hours musk is meanmouthing trump's signature bill for tax cuts to the rich.
musk has to repair the damage done to Tesla, which apparently contributes a lot of money to his empire, although now, with all the new government contracts he got, that may become moot. I dunno. I don't think it is salvageable. But, he's going to try. He sure didn't anticipate the loss of Tesla.
I'll believe this when trump reneges on one of those billion dollar contracts that musk got. musk participated in DOGE until he eliminated all the detriment he had from the various departments he trashed. Also, probably got some real dirt, and some backdoor secret control, over all that stuff. Plus the contracts. So, he really, really profited from this association. trump will have to take away some contract to get even with this double dealing on musk's part.
Musk shows his true colors when he attends a presser and accepts that gold key, and then immediately denounces the bill. What a lowlife. But, he has to do something for Tesla. His first loyalty is to himself. So, don't believe whatever he says about "bankrupting the U.S." He doesn't care about that as long as he gets his cut. Which, as far as I can see, he already got. He already took food out of the mouths of other people's children.
I am not so sure that this isn't a ploy on both their parts. I don't follow musk, and most people won't let him rehab his own reputation by following his lead. He's a rat. But, trump uses such stuff to distract, he thrives on chaos and musk is still the richest man on the planet. He's still useful no matter what. So, I think this could be a setup.
It's not that I think that musk isn't capable of sticking a knife in trump's back. I just am not convinced that this is real.

(8,759 posts)We have enough past examples to refer to. Anybody Trump allies with eventually ends up tossed away and screwed over. Not exactly a new pattern.
In this case, it was a sure thing it would happen quickly. I am surprised they lasted that long. Both ashore megalomaniacs with egos the size of a planet. They were bound to clash.

(415 posts)Relations between two malignant narcissists like this are unlikely to stay cordial for long, and both can't help themselves when it comes to impulsive social media posting. I also don't think they're capable of being this coordinated, tbh. Their handlers might be, but neither of these assholes seems to listen to their handlers.

trump will burn it all down before he admits defeat.

We will find out. It would, of course, come as a shock, since the felon always parts ways on a good note. We can only hope it doesn't turn into another Burr-Hamilton duel type of thing that destroys both.

(1,852 posts)I'll believe it's "real" when there are actual real-world consequences meted out to one or both of them. IMO, the Epstein tweet is pretty meaningless unless backed up with something the public has never seen before - that Epstein/Trump photo is ubiquitous on the internet, and it's common knowledge they were pals, if not besties. If Elon drops previously unknown Epstein/Trump evidence or Trump goes hard after Elon's contracts or something else, then maybe I'll believe. Until then, this is all likely to be forgotten in a month, and the only remnant remaining will be the false public memory that 'Trump and Elon fell out, don't you remember?' That is a perfect result for Elon (although wont' be enough to save Tesla). Not sure what Donald gets out of it, but it's conceivable that he has his reasons, and it's not like the toxic Elon is helping him much at the moment.
Both have plenty of experience manipulating public messaging to their advantage. Both have been ridiculed and mocked mercilessly on the internet for years, so they can surely take a couple of toothless barbs thrown their way. Sure, it's been kind of fun to watch in the same way celeb gossip can be fun to watch, but I want to see one of them actually suffer something consequential as a result before I'll really give a shit about this.

Trump is breaking with tech, the damage done and the fall guy slugged.
Musk is breaking with the Troglodytes.
They were always uncomfortable with "TEK" and people with "DET CALCULATERS"

(8,103 posts)cheated on the election? Because, that would be the main thing most of us would like to know. If musk has proof, he could get immunity and topple the trump regime. That might take away Vance, too--we'd end up with Johnson. Weird stuff.

(3,096 posts)it is real. Everyone expected this from the beginning. Trump simply cannot share attention, and Musk bled off a lot of that over the past few months. Along with his government subsidies getting stripped, his head got too big and Trump felt the power tug at him. What is happening was as predictable as the sunrise.

(2,090 posts)Trump looked like a deer in the headlights and didn't take any questions after. He looked very preoccupied and, in fact, scared.
It doesn't seem real to rational people as it's not how you'd expect two normal adult males to react, but it's exactly how you'd expect two raging narcissists to act.
