Americans are going to have to cut off their MAGA family and friends if they haven't already

There can no longer be “normal” relations with Trump voters.

No longer can we just look the other way. No longer can we just engage nicely with Trump voters by politely avoiding political discussions.

Elections have consequences and it’s time that the political Civil/Cold War that America is in takes another step.

I have cut off friends who I know voted for Trump. And now I’m moving to family members. They don’t get to enjoy my company ever again.

More needs to be done. If you are willing to be trained in safety and marksmanship, and you have highly secure areas in which to safely store them, arm yourselves. BUT ONLY if you are willing to be a responsible, trained firearms owner. If not, don’t even consider it.

The reality is, unless the unlikely action of Congressional Republicans standing up and stopping the fascists in their tracks, we are headed for terrible times. And Trump humpers, family or not will be encouraged to be violent.

It sucks to be where we are today, but the sadness doesn’t change the reality of the situation.

Thankfully I don't have MAGAS or Maga leaners in my close family. I do have some of those R-voting "fiscal conservative" Magas in extended family and in-laws. The "I Got Mine" crowd. I have not seen them since before the Pandemic and don't plan to. I would not go to their funerals.

I'm not saying it's easy to do. I've posted many threads on this board about the brutal end of my relationship with my father because of his support of Trump.

It's not easy, but they are on the side of evil.

There is no middle ground anymore. Sadly, they are either against this administration, or they have chosen evil.

Where that leaves you, is either siding with supporters of evil, or choosing otherwise.

My parents chose to have me and then they chose to have my siblings. My siblings and I grew up and came of age together. I chose my partner and my partner and I chose to have our children. Literally nothing in my life has been an accident of birth.

There is nothing in this world up to and including my own life that is more important to me than my family.

Politics is generally a passing fad with quite a bit of bread and circuses thrown in for good measure. It will never interfere with the love and bond that my family and I share.

There will always be a new cultural issue or a new moral issue or a new knuckleheaded politician or a new savior. Flavors sometimes change by the week. My family is forever and I can rely on them under any circumstance no matter what. Only by my death will I ever sacrifice that bond.

62. No thanks. If you think we can do this alone, I would like to point you to the 2016 and 2024 election results.

Plus, they are my family.

Far from your conclusion, my conclusion is that we need to have the awkward conversations and find the common ground starting yesterday

The United States no longer has its sovereignty. That’s why everything he does is pointed to a result that will hurt the American people.

That’s something that people of any political strupe can reject and must.

No kings!

I used to like her but now I keep my interactions with her to an absolute minimum. I have tried and tried to understand MAGAts but it's impossible. They enjoy cruelty and hate those who happen to have been born with the wrong color of skin. They are bitterly angry about everything and they are bitterly victims of everything. Donald whines and MAGAts howl back louder than every last demon in hell.

I wash my hands of them.

If some people choose to follow that path, fine. And if others choose not to, that’s fine too. IMO, no one here has standing to sit in judgment of their fellow DUers choices of how they relate to family members.

Don't know what I would do if I still lived near them, but I do know toxic family relationships can affect the nontoxic members. Like have an out of control drug user, alcoholic or rage-aholic. That kind of behavior needs intervention or isolation from the affected family.

doing what we can to be resistors of the fascist dump cult and their agenda. It’s a different story for many of my extended family members who are full on MAGA cult members. I’ve been alienated from them since 2016 with absolutely no regrets. I’ve never had any conservative close friends, but the more casual friendships I’ve had with conservatives, like gym acquaintances, neighbors and past coworkers, have been dampened, and again, I have no regrets.

83. Nah. My family surpasses politics, always.

Although I suspect my folks voted Trump, with reasonable certainty, I don't KNOW. They've never told me. Same with most of my extended family. But at the end of the day, push comes to shove, we all pull in the same direction when it comes to matters of family or safety. If one of us is down and out and needs help, everyone contributes. There's no question of politics or religion or extremism, we're part of one unit and if one of us needs, we all need. Our family is a better safety net than anything the government could provide.

I know I'm lucky in that regard, and there's not a day that goes by that I don't thank the universe for it. But throwing that away over petty politics that in the end none of us can control is the most idiotic thing any one of us could do.

YMMV, of course, but not every person out there is a rabid politico. In fact most aren't.

86. I mean, that's fine, but why? Because they're wearing hats?

Someone in my family wears a Buffalo Bills hat but I'm a Miami Dolphins fan. Should I say "fuck 'em" and cut him out of my life forever?

I understand the concept trying to be conveyed, but for the vast majority of people, they're just voting their financial interests. All the "Cut them out" people are doing is saying "Nyah nyah, your team is evil". It was stupid when the Trumpies did it when Biden is in office and it's stupid now.

Most people don't think beyond their pocketbooks when they vote. Very few people, when they pull the lever, consciously say "Fuck them Liberals and their healthcare and social safety net". By cutting family out, you're letting THOSE ones win while punishing your mostly-apolitical family members who just see it as a sports game.

89. If you want to say something about me, do so. Don't edit it out.

Your edits called me stupid in response, and for some reason you edited them out five times.

Own it! I'm not going to alert on you, you're a grown person entitled to your Constitutionally-guaranteed opinion. So am I. If you're going to attack me, please do so directly. I don't take much stock in hamfisted editing to deliver an attack.

I find the position of removing family members for their political views foolish at best. You say it's "Life and Death". Why? Please, would you explain it to me? Because I'm Bi, my wife is a Bi illegal immigrant, my cousin is Trans, my best friend is Muslim and two of my uncles are gay yet none of us feel our lives are in danger. What am I missing that you can see, apparently?
