.... Early life and education
Padilla is one of three children of Santos and Lupe Padilla, both of whom moved from Mexico, specifically Jalisco and Chihuahua, before meeting and marrying in Los Angeles, where he was born.[3][4] He grew up in Pacoima, Los Angeles, and graduated from San Fernando High School in the northeast San Fernando Valley.[5] He earned a degree in mechanical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1994.[6] He graduated from the Coro Fellows Southern California Program in 1995.[7] ....

(23,205 posts)And to those who see all Hispanics as illegal immigrants, looking Hispanic is reason enough to arrest him. I think this is exactly what is happening to a lot of people who live here legally.

(77,795 posts)Did the officers make the decision (to arrest) on their own, were they given a go-ahead by somebody else, or standing policy from NOEM's staff to attack anybody interrupting? As per CBS, Senator PADILLA "identified himself immediately" and more damning, "he and NOEM had a cordial" interaction afterwards. But he is the senior Senator from his state, so nobody knew that much even after he identified himself?
In my cursory Wiki search, no sign that Dual Citizenship (with Mexico) is involved, so still not "Mexican" (national).

(77,795 posts)Since "calling him a 'Mexican' " might be misinterpreted, there's nothing negative implied in *being* a Mexican, but Mexican refers specifically to Mexican (citizenship? ). "Heritage" is different. The OP's use of the word seems to be referring to skin color or (I don't know what "conversation" means).

(47,665 posts)I also never mentioned the word Mexican. Terms that dehumanize people such as bred shouldn't be used on DU.

(77,795 posts)1- My only point regarding the OP was the use of "Mexican". I never attributed "bred" to the OP, used it myself without a thought to animal husbandry, merely and innocently in the idiomatic connotation of "born and bred".
2- As it turns out in the Google search, it applies to humans in my usage of raised or nurtured.
3- I never said you used "Mexican". Since you didn't explain what bothered you about "bred" and I don't have your frame of reference, I was blanked out about that and replied with the contrast between that blankness and your complete non-acknowledgement of the not-blank offense regarding "Mexican".
4- I reject your assuming, based on your wrong definition, that I would be motivated to dehumanize people, especially your implication that doing so would be intentional.
5- All that said, I don't expect you to be familiar with where I'm coming from, but we've been around here for a long time and while your DU handle is very recognizable to me nothing sticks out in what I've seen, certainly nothing glaringly negative, which is why your posts here knocked the breath out of me.
6- Since you seemed to think you needed to defend the OP from me, I'll add here that, far from disapproving, I have Recced scores of this OP's posts and have never disagreed with any, only this time correcting on solid ground and constructively meant.
Here's to returning to how we have been before, if possible.
