(319,076 posts)Washington, D.C. Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) today spoke on the Senate floor to demand answers on the manhandling and forceful removal of Senator Padilla from DHS Secretary Kristi Noems press conference. Below are Senator Schumers remarks, which can also be viewed here:
I just saw something that sickened my stomach, the manhandling of a United States Senator. We need immediate answers to what the hell went on.

(6,670 posts)It's just a fantasy for all the Schumer-haters to get all hot and bothered about as they perpetuate the myth about how "awful" the "do-nothing" Democrats are. Schumer is a loyal, hardworking and honest Democrat. He has never been, and will never be the screaming and shouting "firebrand" that people fantasize that they want him to be. He doesn't work in front of the cameras, he works in the hallowed halls of the Senate. He doesn't tweet every thing he does. He doesn't pick public fights or come up with cute insults for his enemies. That doesn't mean he's not working. It just means that he's not putting on a show for you or any of the others who wish he was "different" in some way. He is who he is. He's not going to change. That doesn't make him ineffective. It just means he doesn't put on a show. The sooner that everyone accepts that and moves on the happier they will be.
Personally, I think it's better to spend time shitting on Republicans rather than nitpicking and fault-finding Democrats (both the party and leadership.)

(190 posts)you live in the real world. I could tell by the condescending way you patted everyone on the head and explained intraparty realpolitik to us.
I, unfortunately, live in a fantasy world where a sitting US senator is dragged away and cuffed. A fantasy world where brown people, regardless of immigration status, are disappeared. A cotton candy world of fluff where science and education are being dismantled. A fairytale world where a dry drunk weekend hate news personality leads the most lethal military in the history of the world.
Silly me, I somehow expected my fantasy world to be far less stressful.

(88 posts)Never say never when it comes to politics especially in this day & age.
Lots of people thought AOC stood no chance against Joe Crowley who was one of the most powerful Democrats in DC, a 20 year veteran, and was thought to replace Pelosi once she stepped down.
It would be an interesting matchup but I'm not convinced that she even wants to be a Senator in the first place.
Bluetus
(2,795 posts)He even took the glasses off his nose for dramatic effect.
But AFAIK, he hasn't instructed the caucus to stop the Senate by requiring recorded votes on every single issue. No unanimous consent until Noem resigns and is replaced by a person who will uphold the laws and Constitution. And if that means blocking unanimous consent every day until the mid-terms, then so be it.

(8,877 posts)and maybe listen to yourself. Interesting, equating critique of one mat to hating Democrats.
And I didn't even say anything critical of Schumer, just pointing out that OTHER DEMS on the Hill have listened to us asking for some backbone and action and they are providing backbone and actions. So maybe being critical of just strongly worded letters has inspired some fire in some bellies. That's a good thing.

(5,103 posts)Schumer got played in Laken Riley. So far he has been incapable of forming a strong, unified opposition front. Dems are everywhere when it comes to messaging. There is no strong coherent message and that comes from the top.
He's a 3/10 when compared to Harry Reid.

(6,670 posts)... and accepting the reality that the Democrats are not in power and our ability to "omagerd-do-something!" is far less than others may imagine or pretend to be the case. I highly recommend that others do the same. Understanding and accepting that reality will make life so much better and it will be easier to focus efforts and energy on areas that will have more impact (rather than whining that Schumer isn't ranting and raving and putting on a public show.)

Leader Schumer having a hissy-fit meltdown wont accomplish anything, Democrats having no access to the levers of power.

(8,920 posts)Lets talk about an effective opposition, leadership, messaging, motivation *action* of any kind. A movement.
My understanding of the levers of power are directly related to the pressure and force the public place on them. Schumer offers nothing to that cause, nada, zip (except a cancelled book tour).

(22,951 posts)Leadership isn't writing strongly-worded letters. It's not stating "God is on the Thrown" (that was Jeffries.)
It's bringing your caucus together and developing useful tactics and responses that can be consistently used in debate and in action.
Hand-ringing isn't going to cut it.

There were also posts yesterday showing video of Schumer's floor speech. He was one of 17 senators who spoke yesterday after the incident in question. That number may have increased by now.
