and it didnt look like marching Id seen and been a part of. Its the first thing they teach you and you march everywhere in basic. We did in the regular Army except that my platoon had a thing about not matching to the track park. That was established before I got there and I made sure to carry it on.

(72,173 posts)... Army pals said the same thing. They did very little cadence marching after boot. Marines? Whole different mindset in those drill happy whacko red haired step children of the USN.
We marched everywhere in boot. If there were four or less in your group, you ran. So we'd always picked up a hitchhiker and called cadence.

(2,532 posts)Arent they also supposed to turn their heads to the reviewing stand as they pass by? Or is that just for dictators.

but I saw very few soldiers turning to the reviewing stand. Another subtle diss, I guess.

(4,752 posts)how did they get out of boot camp?
Mysterian
(6,568 posts)Marching in formation has nothing to do with "warrior ethos." The soldiers were marching at "route step" which does not require them to stay in step with each other or render any kind of recognition to the reviewing stand. Perhaps goose-stepping is more to your liking.

(22,448 posts)On the 250th anniversary of the Army? In DC, in front of what passes for dignitaries these days? In front of the CINC who wants to be king? That's rather pathetic, no? Intentional or is someone in big trouble this morning?
And I do not want to ever, ever, ever, EVER hear comments from Army "ground pounders" or even jar heads about how lax we squids were. Not one fucking word!
Hope22
(4,811 posts)The word parade doesnt mean what we think it does. Tens of millions of dollars and we cant expect much. I would have thought this first in a lifetime fascist display would have been top notch to show the world who they are dealing with. This display is what our leadership expects and TSF didnt even notice because he shuffles along with his head down at best.
At our local No Kings yesterday we had a showing of over 800 people. Good numbers for our small community. We had five Maggot pick up trucks circling the square honking and antagonizing, round and round, some with beds full of kids. Local police watched and did nothing. It is illegal in this state for kids under 18 to ride in the bed of a truck unless
its a parade. I guess riding around harassing peaceful demonstrators who by the way, needed a permit to do that, constitutes a parade. Forget the paperwork to have an f-ing parade. The rules are only for us!

(6,568 posts)They were combat troops in fatigues. Who gives a shit? Not me.
When it comes time to do infantry stuff, they'll do their job. When it comes time to do Navy stuff, I'm sure the Navy will do their jobs too. Who gives a shit about walking in a fucking parade, especially for a piece of shit like Trump? Not this ol' grunt.

(18,897 posts)"George Orwell, who knew totalitarianism when he saw it, succinctly articulated the menacing nature of the goose-step in his wartime essay 'The Lion and the Unicorn: Socialism and the English Genius' (1941). Sitting in Britain, while 'highly civilized human beings are flying overhead, trying to kill me,' he wrote:"
"One rapid but fairly sure guide to the social atmosphere of a country is the parade-step of its army.
The goose-step, for instance, is one of the most horrible sights in the world, far more terrifying than a dive-bomber. It is simply an affirmation of naked power; contained in it, quite consciously and intentionally, is the vision of a boot crashing down on a face. Its ugliness is part of its essence, for what it is saying is 'Yes, I am ugly, and you darent laugh at me.'
Beyond a certain point, military display is only possible in countries where the common people dare not laugh at the army."

(64,442 posts)For the uninitiated, route step is what large formations of soldiers use when marching long distances. There is no cadence, the only thing one has to do is stay in formation. It is also used to cross many types of bridges, but that's another story. I've never see it used in a parade before.

(4,811 posts)They deserve better! I support the troops and always will even though they dont always support me. With regard to your repeated comment, I guess the point is a voice of reason should have said no to the entire display! There is no voice of reason .or consideration for our troops!

A very constipated look. Hard time passing a big hard lump. I bet he still doesnt get the message he is really not wanted.

Fortunate Son
Some folks are born made to wave the flag
They're red, white and blue
And when the band plays "Hail to the Chief"
They point the cannon at you, Lord
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no senator's son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
Some folks are born, silver spoon in hand
Lord, don't they help themselves, yeah
But when the taxman comes to the door
The house look a like a rummage sale
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no millionaire's son, no, no
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
Yeah, some folks inherit star-spangled eyes
They send you down to war
And when you ask 'em, "How much should we give?"
They only answer, "More, more, more"
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no military son, son
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one, one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one
It ain't me, it ain't me
I ain't no fortunate one

(64,442 posts)Whoever was overseeing that formation would have to shout out "Route Step, March!" for them to be marching like that. Not normal in a parade, of course. When a formation hears "Forward March!" the default is for them to be in step with the cadence.
Should be easy to find. Look for some Captain or Lt Colonel to get fired sometime this week.

(24,699 posts)Thinking back on my Army hitch (all of two years), I can only remember being in one parade, at the end of basic training. One hour of parading, preceded by a few hours of inspection, transportation, and generally standing around waiting. At least the army band played well.
"Fortunate Son" was a few years in the future when my parade occurred.
