Stephen Miller’s wife berated the head of the Social Security Administration to promote a false claim about rampant fraud on the agency’s customer service line that was being pushed by Elon Musk.

Katie Miller, a former White House aide who later joined Musk’s team full time, called then-acting SSA Commissioner Leland Dudek and bluntly told him to keep repeating that 40 percent of calls to the SSA were from scammers and fraudsters even though the claim had zero basis in fact.

“The number is 40 percent,” Miller told Dudek during an April 1 phone call, according to The New York Times. She insisted that Dudek stick to the figure, despite SSA staff writing a response to correct it, because Donald Trump believed Musk. “Do not contradict the president,” she said.

The Times cited the false SSA scammer stat as yet another example of how Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) pushed misleading claims and fabricated data to justify its cost-cutting crusade.

Don't forget, Eloon wanted to shut down customer service via phone at the SSA altogether, to supposedly save money. A false claim that most of the calls are fraudulent would have provided a handy justification, IF he could have gotten it to stick.

I think that the phone call claim was also part of trying to convince Americans that the entire SSA and other federal agencies were riddled with fraud, to justify all the firings, etc. Eloon evidently thought he could just send his doge puppies into the SSA and other federal agencies, claim fraud (without providing any verifiable evidence), and be instantly hailed as a hero! And he still doesn't understand why his "brilliant" plans backfired on him!

so he and Trump can pocket the money. So he has to make people dislike it. And make young people think they'll never get it.

He can't conceive of what it's like to need that money, and how hard people will hang on to a system they rely on for survival.
He won't succeed with old people but I worry about the young who notice what it costs them and can't identify with the need they will have someday. And who are being duped into believing it can't be saved long enough for them to benefit.

Every lie about SS is about taking it away from us. Not just the phone calls, the whole thing. There needs to be a major educational campaign about this.

But I think Eloon, Trump, and the others found out that it's going to be TONS harder than they thought. In fact, I think a LOT of the things Trump wanted to do when he took office again are turning out to be hella harder than he expected, which could turn out to be his downfall.

He's taken a lot of lumps lately, between the public reaction to his trying to dismantle the federal government, worldwide reaction to the tariffs, outrage over the immigration raids, etc., etc. His approval ratings are WAY underwater right now. I don't know what's going to happen, but I feel a lot more hopeful than I did a couple of months ago.

I know some people have already given up, but I'm nowhere near ready to do that. Not after this past Saturday. The American people aren't going to let our democracy go down if we can help it, and we have only just begun to fight!

This 40% rate of fraudulent calls was a bunch of bullshit. The fraudsters would call to change direct deposits, but most of the time, we figured out they were not who they said they were. This was never at a 40% rate. Dudek was not very kind to the agency, often caving to Musk's demands. Not sure what goes on now.
