E.P.A. Plans to Reconsider a Ban on Cancer-Causing Asbestos
The Trump administration’s move sets back a decades-long effort to end the use of the material, which is widely banned in other countries.

40 or so years ago I worked on monitoring big removal projects. That stuff is scary. It gets airborne and then it doesn’t take any great exposure before mesothelioma may develop. Smoking makes your odds much much worse, so maybe it’s time to repeal all those smoking restrictions while he’s at it.

WR Grace was mining vermiculite, which is a rock that gets fluffy if it’s heated up enough, in Libby. At one point 80 percent of the world’s supply of this very useful mineral came from there. This stuff has millions of uses - insulation, fireproofing, plant growing medium…they even use it as fake snow in the movies. What no one realized until half the town came down with mesothelioma is the Libby mine is heavily contaminated with white asbestos. Since you can’t clean the asbestos from the vermiculite, they had no choice but to close the mine.

Butte is also an asbestos source. I suspect everything east of the Idaho state line has asbestos deposits. There might be some in the Silver Valley, but the ore Hecla is looking for formed below where asbestos is so there are no issues with it in the Lucky Friday and Sunshine mines.

Many older commercial buildings still have asbestos. They can be money pits for investors and developers. Or, if asbestos is deregulated it can be a windfall. Buy them cheap now and strip out the asbestos without all of those pesky enviromental and safety regulations. They know the deregulation would be temporary. $$$

Our small town has pristine water but I won't drink it. The main water line that supplies my water contains asbestos. The yearly Municipal water report showed our water has levels of asbestos above allowable amounts.

Our town is starting to replace our lines, starting with the wealthy side of town.

My best friend. Sorry for your loss too.

I loved my mom but we were never close. She lived to 96 he died at 75 in 2000. I was just happy he didn't have to see Bush and Trump. That would have killed him just from that. He was a firm democrat who watched hours of news a night. Watched all the watergate stuff. I used to watch it with him as an early teen.
