GOP senator insists 'Biblically, you're supposed to work' to earn medical care

By Matthew Chapman
Published June 20, 2025 7:34 PM ET

Sen. Jim Justice (R-WV) defended the GOP's planned deep cuts to Medicaid that could kick over 10 million low-income people off health insurance.

According to The Independent's D.C. bureau chief Eric Michael Garcia, when confronted over the plan in President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful bill" to force states to institute work requirements for Medicaid, Justice said, "Biblically, we are supposed to work."

"We have taken the dignity and the hope and the belief away from a lot of people where they are hopeless, they think they can't," he said.

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve

1When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, 2and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. 3He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt. 4Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

Justice's mining companies have been scrutinized for alleged cases of safety violation and unpaid taxes; in 2016, NPR called him the nation's "top mine safety delinquent". Justice allegedly owed millions of dollars to the government in back taxes and unpaid coal mining fees and fines. Two debt-related lawsuits were settled in 2019,[18] and in 2020 mining companies Justice or his family owned agreed to pay $5 million in delinquent safety fines.

According to a 2020 ProPublica investigation, Justice had paid more than $128 million in judgments and settlements over his businesses' unpaid bills. In October 2023, a federal court ordered the U.S. Marshals Service to seize and sell a helicopter the company owned to pay an $8 million judgment granted to a creditor.

Forbes estimated Justice's net worth at $513.3 million in October 2021. By January 2025, Forbes reported that Justice's net worth had fallen to below 0 due to having over $1 billion in debt.

Unwillingness to work and taking advantage of others is called out in the bible, but never the inability to work. We are called to feed the poor, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the prisoner, and tend the sick. Generosity reflects God's character and is commended.

It's more about our own hearts being right with God and less about making absolutely certain that we are not being taken advantage of anyway.

a willingness to accept whatever the fuck your masters give you. Just like in the old days. Their hatred of the New Deal is all-consuming.

The belief that people deserve nothing and must "earn" literally EVERYTHING in our short lives (even as prices rise for all eternity) is pure Social Darwinism. Something most fucking Christians ironically don't seem to understand.

And the fucking "prosperity gospel" isn't original Christianity, that shit came much later--the unholy love child of religion and capitalism, trying to convince people that there's somehow some kind of moral dimension to obtaining financial success. The fact that Trump even fucking exists should be enough to fucking disqualify that one.
