Consumers rethink vacation plans amid tariff turmoil

As turmoil over tariffs and trade policy chips away at consumer confidence, some travelers are rethinking their summer plans.

Consulting giant Deloitte surveyed American travelers at the end of March — just before President Donald Trump unveiled a broad tariff policy on April 2 — and then again two weeks later. Over that two-week period, the average summer travel budget among respondents dropped from $4,967 to $4,606, according to the survey.

Both surveys queried different respondents, though both pools were representative samples for the U.S. population, said Kate Ferrara, Deloitte's transportation and hospitality leader, in an emailed response to questions.

"Economic uncertainty is going to affect how tightly people hold onto their wallets," said Mallory Dumond, a supervisor at travel agency Travelmation LLC, in an interview in April after tariffs began to affect air-travel demand. "Discretionary spending is not going to be first-class airfare to Europe."

Smart people. With Trump’s chaos domestically and globally we don’t know if we will survive financially.
