Trump's EPA plans to 'reconsider' Biden-era asbestos ban. Here's what that means

In late June 2025, a rumor spread online that the Environmental Protection Agency, under U.S. President Donald Trump, planned to reverse a ban on asbestos, a toxic, cancer-causing mineral once widely used as a building material.

Claims about the Trump administration's purported proposal spread on platforms like Facebook, Bluesky, Reddit and Threads.

Trump/EPA are considering reversing the ban on asbestos. Asbestos is EXTREMELY carcinogenic. Every year, over 40,000 in the US die from residual asbestos exposure – globally, more than 250,000 die annually.

This is absolute insanity. Call your Senators and Representative and demand this is stopped.

As first reported by the The New York Times on June 16, 2025, it is true that the EPA plans to "reconsider" a ban on the last type of asbestos used in the United States, which was adopted by former President Joe Biden's administration. As of this writing, it remained unclear if the Trump administration definitively planned to reverse this ban.

The United States prohibited most forms of asbestos in 1989, but the courts overturned much of that ban; in 2019, the EPA issued a "final rule to ensure that asbestos products that are no longer on the market cannot return to commerce without the Agency evaluating them and putting in place any necessary restrictions or prohibiting use."

Donny should snort a big line of asbestos fibers since he thinks they're harmless. Tell him they will get him high.

Asbestos conspiracy theories, my ass! I’ve sat in the bedrooms of people with mesothelioma, participating in a deposition, and literally wondering if the person would pass away during the deposition.

Meso is vanishing rare absent asbestos exposure. There is no reason to bring this crap back.

Father was an electrician working on a new building and was exposed. His son, a friend of mine, said he would come home from work covered in the white dust. His Mom would take the clothes, hang them on their clothesline, and whack them with a broomstick to knock the dust off. The dust would fly everywhere.

It took a few years. Father died first, then Mother, then three of the sons, including my friend.

The only known cases of mesothelioma are all caused by asbestos. A very tiny amount "hooked" in the lungs is enough to kill.
