Bush ignored warnings about Osama Bin Ladin. Then, when he stood on the pile of rubble at Ground Zero with a bullhorn, idiots like Chris Matthew compared him to Churchill and FDR.

(131,231 posts)though he looked pretty damn foolish landing on the aircraft carrier to announce "Mission accomplished," which it clearly wasn't. Apart from the NYT, which beclowned itself with Judith Miller's help, at least some media were pretty critical once the Shock'n'Awe blitz went sideways. But NYT and CNN will be back to their old tricks, figurative mouths shaped like those of inflatable sex dolls.

(4,409 posts)I was screaming at the TV that those were human beings shocked and awed into burning flesh and torn limbs. Despised mainstream media ever since. Cheerleaders for war and stenographers for the military.

(5,119 posts)The Iraqis were basically surrendering at the end of the 1991 Persian Gulf War when U.S. air power decimated them in their vehicles along the roads as they were fleeing. Most of the media were fine with all of it. Parades here in the U.S. followed.

(4,409 posts)The Highway of Death. Horrific.
I read a figure of a 100,000 slaughtered around their vehicles if I recall correctly. May have been an exaggeration, but tens of thousands - probably.
That it was possible to perpetrate and then ignore such a war crime tells us everything about the good 'ole USA.

(5,119 posts)Embedded correspondents did not see everything that went down.
When the troops returned home in the spring of 1991, many parades took place, and the media covered them extensively.
I think the Bush 41 administration fouled up by seemingly giving a green light to Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait. I think a diplomat by the name of Glaspy was involved in the miscommunication. James Baker flew to Iraq to personally meet with Saddam Hussein to try to get him to back off, but, by then, it was too late.
Eventually, Saddam Hussein was executed before he could spill the beans on everything that he knew about U.S. involvement in the region over the decades.
