Trump followed up with an urgent appeal to get America's domestic oil and gas supply flowing: "To The Department of Energy: DRILL, BABY, DRILL!!! And I mean NOW!

The Iranians have touted the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a key commercial shipping channel through which a significant portion of the world's oil supply passes daily, as a potential retaliation for the strikes. Iran is a major oil producer and would also suffer from a closure.

A spike in oil prices would likely feed back into higher inflation for American consumers, a potentially big political problem for Trump, who ran on a campaign to cool prices.

Low oil prices give little incentive for oil companies to drill more. Particularly for domestic oil which is more expensive to refine.

So, keep oil prices down, mean little increase in domestic drilling. Drill baby drill means, prices are high enough domestic oil sources are profitable and certain oil fields are viable again, so more drilling.
