As Marc Maron ends his legendary run on the WTF podcast, hes decided to go out with a bang, not a whimper. In his latest episode, Maron unleashed holy hellfire on all these anti-woke comics while acknowledging that those comedians had accomplished exactly what they wanted.
I see em around still doing trans jokes, he said. You won. The trans people have no right to live the life they want. In some states, its legislated. In others, its just based in fear.
Same with women, Maron said. Anti-woke policy has destroyed any sort of pathway to try to give the vulnerable and the marginalized a leg up in the world, under this umbrella of anti-woke, which was the big to-do with all the comics.

(5,610 posts)And sadly these comics have no self-awareness so they dont see the problem of only picking on the little guy with their jokes.

Whats the difference between being woke, and being polite?

(40,081 posts)Woke definition on wiki: Woke is an adjective derived from African-American English used since the 1930s or earlier to refer to awareness of racial prejudice and discrimination, often in the construction stay woke. The term acquired political connotations by the 1970s and gained further popularity in the 2010s with the hashtag #staywoke. Over time, woke came to be used to refer to a broader awareness of social inequalities such as sexism and denial of LGBTQ rights. Woke has also been used as shorthand for some ideas of the American Left involving identity politics and social justice, such as white privilege and reparations for slavery in the United States.

(1,964 posts)Woke is a good thing, and we should defend the term.
No wonder they can't define their view of the term, there is nothing bad about it.

(8,938 posts)Woke absolutely has meaning. More importantly, it has *context*.

(462 posts)No trolling, Please dont misunderstand.
I posted the link to show that they dont care about the meaning of woke. If you havent read the attached link or seen the embedded I recommend it.
The whole anti woke phenomena is just a way for them to project the word woke toward whatever make believe grievance they have against the left. If you ask 99 different MAGAs what woke is, you would get 99 different answers.
Quibling over the definition of woke is missing that point.

(8,938 posts)I misunderstood, I thought you were telling readers of this thread that woke has no meaning. Instead, youre pointing out that right-wingers complain about many things, like Marxism, and they know absolutely nothing about Marxism. MTG is the poster child illustrating your original point above. 👋

(42,423 posts)A certain amount of rudeness is expected in comedy these days, I guess. Maybe we don't all find rudeness funny, but tastes have changed over the years.
Remember when comedians like Don Rickles would insult people in a humorous, good-natured way and even the ones who were insulted laughed along with the audience? There's no good-natured chuckling any more, it's just in-your-face angry diatribes. Why do people find that funny? How are they being entertained?
I don't get it, I must be old-fashioned.

(15,857 posts) like around 10, and I didnt get what he was doing. I thought he was seriously insulting people. Watching him as an adult what a talent he was. When you keep in mind that he was just kidding, the most outlandish and semi-racist things were funny. It was a way to bring people together, to acknowledge differences without setting up a hierarchy. I think Jeff Ross and the Friars Club are carrying his torch forward.
But society is bifurcating. There are people who subsist on real racism and need entertainment that supports a white supremacist worldview. These are the people who took Archie Bunker at face value. They dont get satire or nuance. And they have no interest in bringing people together just the opposite. Hence stiflingly unfunny people like Gutfeld have an audience. Their jokes are usually some variation of, Immigrants sure are lazy, ha ha! Which makes no sense to us, but justifies their prejudice, so they eat it up.
