A veterinarian determined that Freddie suffered contusions to his right forward rib area.
CBP agriculture specialists conducted a subsequent baggage examination of Maries luggage based on Freddies alert and discovered 55 pounds of beef meat, 44 pounds of rice, 15 pounds of eggplant, cucumbers, and bell peppers, two pounds of corn seeds, and a pound of herbs. All agriculture products were prohibited from entering the United States and seized.
Being caught deliberately smuggling well over one hundred pounds of undeclared and prohibited agriculture products does not give one permission to violently assault a defenseless Customs and Border Protection beagle, said Christine Waugh, CBPs Area Port Director for the Area Port of Washington, D.C. We rely heavily on our K9 partners and Freddie was just doing his job. Any malicious attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, and CBP will continue to work with our investigating and prosecuting partners to deal swift and severe justice to perpetrators.

STERLING, Va. An Egyptian man pled guilty to federal charges Wednesday after kicking a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agriculture detector dog that alerted to undeclared agriculture products in his baggage at Washington Dulles International Airport on Tuesday.
CBP agriculture detector dog Freddie is a 5-year-old male beagle serving at Washington Dulles International Airport.
CBP Beagle Brigader Freddie sniffs out prohibited agriculture products at our nation's border that could threaten our vital agricultural industries.
Hamed Ramadan Bayoumy Aly Marie, 70 years old, pled guilty during an initial appearance in the U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia to harming animals used in law enforcement (18USC1368). He was credited with time served, ordered to pay the veterinarians fee, and to immediately report to CBP for removal from the United States. Marie departed the United States on a flight to Egypt at 12:30 p.m. today.
The U.S. Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of Virginia prosecuted Marie.
CBP agriculture detector dog Freddie, a five-year-old beagle, and his handler were inspecting baggage from travelers who arrived from Cairo, Egypt when Freddie alerted to one of Maries suitcases. As the CBP canine handler started questioning Marie, he violently kicked Freddie with sufficient force to lift the 25-pound beagle off the ground.
CBP officers immediately descended upon Marie, handcuffed him, and turned him over to Homeland Security Investigations agents for prosecution.

(3,053 posts)The part I don't get is the 'smuggling' part - what's the point of taking 100#'s of meat/produce from Egypt to the U.S.? It's not like someone is going to get rich on selling "55 pounds of beef meat, 44 pounds of rice, 15 pounds of eggplant, cucumbers, and bell peppers, two pounds of corn seeds, and a pound of herbs" in the U.S.
And all my best to Freddie! As an aside, I really don't care that much about adult people any more. When we croak, our estate plan gives 50% to animal welfare organizations, the rest to theater groups and children.

(13,855 posts)... sort of decently paid internship program when he was at NYU in the early '80's.
He often talked about how different the job was from what he had expected. He said it was always food stuffs, spices, or other ingredients. In his time there, he had never encountered drugs or other things that people generally think of when they think of smuggling. His impression was that people were just hellbent on bringing in things that were staples at home that they believed would be tough to get here. Often, they didn't even fully appreciate that what they were doing was prohibited.
The quantities in this case seem way above the "everyday" sort of food smuggling my friend described back then. The reporting doesn't specify, but I wonder if it was "specialized" meat of some sort. Regardless. Nothing can justify violence, whether to a customs agent, or canine partner.
Here's what AI had to say:
- Batt and Hamam (Duck and Pigeon): Egyptians may smuggle these meats due to perceived better quality and hygiene compared to alternatives available in some destinations.
- Bastirma and Sogoq: These are traditional Egyptian cured meats, with Bastirma made from beef and Sogoq being a spiced beef sausage. Egyptians may smuggle these meats because they have a strong cultural significance and represent a taste of home.

(3,053 posts)Speaking of the '80's, when I saw the word "smuggler" my mind immediately went to Glenn Fry singing Smuggler's Blues on Miami Vice and what they were smuggling. What a ground-breaking show.
But yeah, he probably had a big party planned with those he was visiting and was going to impress them with food from their home
country.
The way they treat dogs in Egypt is beyond contempt, I won't post a link but there are numerous articles online about how they're treated. According to Islamic tradition, the Prophet Mohammed, an unlettered merchant from the 7th century, had stated that angels do not enter a house where there is a dog.

(13,855 posts)But it is also clear that things remain very, very, very grim for street dogs, with a few animal welfare organizations making some inroads.
https://ktla.com/5-live/here-is-why-dog-ownership-is-soaring-in-egypt/
According to the Egyptian Kennel Association, the number of registered dog owners in the country jumped from 2,000 in 2016 to over 860,000 in 2019. Experts say the increase is due to a changing culture in the Arab world.
In mainstream Islam, dogs are seen as unclean animals, with Muslims only allowed to own dogs for the purposes of guarding or hunting. Recently, well-respected Egyptian religious scholars have come forward with fatwas, or a ruling on Islamic law, arguing that dogs are not unclean, and owning them would not undermine a Muslims piety.
Some experts say the pet ownership reflects Egyptians desires to stress social identity and embrace lifestyles not common in the country.
An AI inquiry yeilded this tidbit:
Dar al-Ifta, Egypt's religious advisory council, clarifies that dogs are considered pure in Islam and that Islamic law prohibits the killing of harmless stray animals. This helps counter some traditional negative perceptions of dogs

(100,133 posts)Something like a wedding, maybe. Not just beef, but eggplants and a pound of herbs. The only thing that doesnt fit is seed corn.
I am surprised this man didnt get harsher penalties bringing in raw agricultural products is a real no-no for very sound reasons. Theres even limitations between states.
Meanwhile, I hope the beagle is healing well and that someone gave him treats.
