Can Mamdani's Energetic Campaign Be a Blueprint for Democrats?

Last Friday evening, Zohran Mamdani, sweaty and grinning, began walking south from the northern tip of Manhattan as part of a final push for votes in New York City’s fiercely contested Democratic mayoral primary.

Mr. Mamdani, a Queens-based progressive state assemblyman, strolled down from Inwood Hill to Battery Park, his campaign shooting video along the way. He hugged a bicyclist. He dapped up a man outside a bodega. He ate a slice of pizza.

In other words, he looked like a normal human being — albeit one who was on a 13-mile walk in the middle of the night.

In the months since their loss to President Trump last November, Democrats have been engaged in a prolonged period of hand-wringing and soul-searching, seeking answers for how to win back the voters who said the party had lost touch with them and catered too much to elites. Strategists and focus-group researchers proposed one seemingly simple fix more often than anything else: Just be yourself.

His election was just too much for the Bible Belt - they went berserk.

And he spoke directly to constituents’ concerns and came across as authentic. It was basically the same playbook that made Bernie so competitive in 2016. Hell that’s part of the reason many voted for Trump, claiming he was “real”.

I’m not sold that calling yourself a socialist (democratic or otherwise) will play in most swing districts and states though.

It also helped that Cuomo was a lazy campaigner.

his campaign’s relentless focus on affordability hit home with New Yorkers facing rising housing costs but may not be as applicable in other places. (He also still faces a potentially difficult general election campaign, where his progressive policy proposals will be scrutinized and various business interests are likely to campaign against him.)

And it’s not necessarily easy to translate a campaign in a deep-blue, urban area to battleground districts around the country, said Jared Leopold, a Democratic strategist.

This is where the Democratic Party is missing the boat. The 2relentless focus on affordability hit home with New Yorkers facing rising housing costs but may not be as applicable in other places."

SAY WHAT?!! People are hurting all over the US. The working class is hurting. Rents are unaffordable in most places. Say what?!

A strong economic message is a must, without sounding like Repukes on equality issues. Be unapologetic. The same exact proposals may not play everywhere, but it was a smart and people centered campaign.

I, a born & bred NYC'r have walked a lot of those very same streets, even from the tippy top of Inwood, and southern tip of South Ferry.
Much of Inwood, Washington Heights, some of the following Hamilton Hgts, Morningside Hgts, Harlem, much of Upper West, Lincoln Sq (UWS), Midtown (Clinton, Helk's Kitchen), Chelsea, West Village, SOHO, Tribeca, White Hall, or City Hall, Southern Tip. 🙂 👍
In fact naming the areas brought back snippets of memories of all those areas at different times. I would be in a fair amount of areas in a given year, between school originally, jobs, errands, and fun.

But not all at once!
I recognized almost every area they filmed. 🩷 (I love my city)

A gazillion yrs ago I visited SF. Loved it!🥰
