(10,917 posts)ICE was hanging around Sharp Hospital-Chula Vista early this past week.
The hospital is about 1 mile from my house.
This is getting too close for comfort.

(60,460 posts)Here in my section of my town north of Düsseldorf, no one is allowed to forget. After the war ended, the townspeople forced the Geheime Staatspolizei (Gestapo) workers left to march to an unmarked, but well-known area on the edge of town, and forced them to exhume their victims, and cart them back into the center of town where they were give a proper burial.
Their headquarters was later transformed into an elementary school, which both of my daughters attended. All students learned about the girl after whom the school was named:

(9,725 posts)I reported a story that included a Guatemalan restaurant owner keeping a diary here: https://www.democraticunderground.com/100220091050.
This was at the beginning of March. Soon after, Miller made his 3,000/day directive and they began pulling over landscaping trucks in our area. The current budget reconciliation bill seeks to more than double the number of direct ERO (Expedited Removal Operations) employees and fund huge increases in the construction, operation, and maintenance of, uh, concentration camps.

They don't care who hurts as long as they're making money from it.

At this rate, we may see summary executions on the town square in time for Christmas.
And... don't forget to say: "Merry Christmas" if you know what's good for you.

(28,493 posts)She would have just turned 96. Her father lived to age 91.
I often think about how different some things might be, had she lived. She'd have become a writer, well she already was a writer, and we would all be talking about her books.

(60,460 posts)She grew up about 155 miles east of where Anne Frank lived, today less than a three hour drive. Of course, at the time, she had the right papers, so other than having to jump into ditches during strafing runs by allied warplanes on the way to school, she endured no constant danger.

Im sorry, I just dont have any sympathy to give right now. If you are reading this and you do. I am happy for you. I sometimes wish I was so isolated.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
