On a zoom with my niece in Post Falls and it's just breaking. According to her daughter, the shooter started a fire with the plan to pick off the responders.

Kootenai County Emergency Management issued an emergency shelter in place for people in the area of Canfield Mountain Trailhead and Nettleton Gulch Road on Sunday afternoon.

4 News Now is working to confirm what is being broadcast on the scanner, which is that fire crews responding to a wildfire were ambushed and shot.

3. I am very close to the area of the ambush now. And it IS being called an AMBUSH.

I am at a Coeur d’Alene hotel on I-90 waiting to start fire lookout duty tomorrow. I saw the smoke column come up on the south side of Hayden Lake about two hours ago. Hayden and Hayden Lake are on the close north side of Coeur d’Alene.

Local news sources are saying that the fire was started to lure first responders in, at which time they were ambushed. Three firefighters were reported shot in the chest. Other firefighters and law enforcement are/were shot at.

It is hot and very dry, so the fire in and of itself is significant. There are incredible numbers of sirens and multiple helicopters in the area.

Emergency responders from North Idaho and Spokane rushed to Canfield Mountain on Sunday afternoon following reports of a possible ambush attack on firefighters responding to a brush fire on the mountain in Coeur d'Alene.

Officials have yet to confirm the exact nature of the incident, but according to the North Idaho News Facebook page, the suspect fired shots at firefighters and law enforcement and possibly others in the area. … People were evacuated from the Fernan Gun Club, and told there was a sniper in the area.

Several emergency vehicles staged at Cherry Hill Park off 15th Street. Around 3:30 p.m., 15th Street was blocked off from the Interstate 90 on and off ramps north for several blocks.

Residents are advised to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.
