New Obama offer moves toward Boehner

Last edited Fri Dec 21, 2012, 01:55 AM - Edit history (2)

From a Monday AP story which was posted on the home page of the news section for the San Francisco Chronicle on Thursday, December 20, 2012:

"WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has agreed to curtail future cost-of-living increases for recipients of Social Security and softened his demand for higher taxes at upper income levels, narrowing differences with House Speaker John Boehner in "fiscal cliff" talks, people familiar with the talks said Monday.
...
"Obama's willingness to reduce future cost-of-living increases in Social Security, government retirement and numerous other programs marked another clear concession to Boehner, although it came with an asterisk. The president wants lower-income recipients to receive protection against any loss from scaling back future cost-of-living increases, these officials said.
...
"The new offer that was given to Boehner at the White House closed the gap between the two men considerably on a framework for a deal.
...
"Earlier, at the White House, spokesman Jay Carney sidestepped when asked about curbing cost-of-living increases for benefit programs. The president "is prepared to make tough choices. ..."

Old news or not, those at the Chronicle apparently believe that the story is a contemporary one and newsworthy.

The defeat of Plan B does not mean that President Obama has pulled back from his latest offer to make more concessions.

Chronicle apparently believed that the AP story had merit when it was published at 2:46 am, Thursday, December 20, 2012, nineteen hours ago.

latest willingness to make more concessions and cut SS through a chained-CPI?

SS is not related to the deficit.

How many more concessions does he have to make?

I don't know why this article is dated Dec. 20 ... it's completely out of date. Boehner rejected the president's offer when he substituted Plan B, which itself has now failed.

The failure to pass Plan B does not mean that President Obama has pulled back on his willingness to make even more concessions.

Apparently, the editors at the Chronicle believe that it is newsworthy.

Everyone here is saying the same thing: this is old news. The article even states this is the plan from Monday. It's Thursday today. The video at the top of the piece is from Dec. 17. Have a cup of coffee and think about this again.

It's not on the home page of the current SF Chronicle. The front-page story on the SF Chronicle is about Plan B failing.

In the upper left corner of the home page of the Chronicle that accessible in the Mid-West at the present time (Thursday, 11:43 p.m.) is this photo with the caption:

Don't care what edition of which paper. The quotes are from freaking Monday. Did you read the article or simply gleefully post a negative headline?

Sorry to sound so adamant about it. I've made mistakes like that, too: it's easy to do with the Web so changeable and loosey-goosey.

The author of the headline apparently used the word in the same manner as many dictionaries, including The Free Dictionary found on the web:

curtail [kɜːˈteɪl]
vb
(tr) to cut short; abridge
