I was just wondering why that had to be included.
eta: There are Republican descendants of Holocaust survivors. Just Google it. That fact does not
give anyone's opinion any gravitas whether you agree or not.
Just a pet peeve of mine.

I've never seen a group of Democratic politicians line up to defeat a Democratic nominee like this. It's been a sight to behold.

(4,780 posts)The fact that his parents were survivors has no bearing on the issue. My grandparents were pogrom survivors- does that make my opinion more valid?
Yes, I do agree that it is mostly a class issue, but it doesn't help him when he refuses to deny clearly anti-Israel tropes and call them up as that. ( the "globalize the Intifada stuff) An astute politician would not double down on justifying them or dismissing Intifada as merely meaning "struggle" using a literal definition rather than understanding what the inferred meaning is. Surely he isn't that naive.
Unfortunately his refusal to do that will hurt him politically - that's the reality no matter what you believe.

(4,780 posts)I would most likely vote for Mamdani. That being said, I was just questioning his refusal to address the real meaning of "Globalize the Intifada' instead of whitewashing it. That will not help him politically as it will alienate him to some demographics.
Don't we want him to win?
I'm a cynical old coot and look for points of weakness in any candidate I support.
Maybe I'm wrong - it's been decades since I lived there.
I also think he needs to flesh out his ideas.

(69,643 posts)There are a few issues Democratic candidates probably do need to sidestep as much as possible. This is one of them.
One unexpected good thing that could come of Mamdani's win is that it's now clear that Muslims are not an oppressed minority with no power. At least not in NYC. So we can drop that trope, which has been false for a long time, and maybe get people to acknowledge that antisemitism is a bigger problem.

(4,780 posts)He could denounce suicide bombings and killing of innocents, saying that's not what the term means to him and he hopes not for others.
It's not "banning" anything, but distancing from it.
Surely you understand the difference.

(69,643 posts)It demonstrates that American Muslims are not powerless minorities in need of sympathy. In fact, it demonstrates that American Muslims are a rising demographic that wields some political power.
Now maybe we can take a closer look at the very real problem of antisemitism that is affecting American Jews.

(2,561 posts)A supermajority of Americans and an even bigger majority of Democrats want a Ceasefire NOW. Its the Democratic Party thats out of step with their own base, in favor of the politics of their big donors, providing full support for Israels genocidal actions.

Israels critics are always accused of anti-Semitism , a charge that serves to silence even the mildest questioning of that countrys policies.

(4,498 posts)Donor class/ Super PACs or the voters.
When over 20 million dollars is spent and the defeat did not come in a marginal win but a substantial win, that is what scares the billionaires and their cronies.
When you lose to Trump, a demagogue, twice...and your fallback is that voters are to blame and not the candidates..you might see that same result over and over again.
Since Obama's term, Democrats have suffered a net loss of 947 state legislative seats, 63 House seats, 11 senators, and 13 governors and then some.
If you believe that racism and misogyny are the main reasons, how did Obama get elected twice, and Hillary Clinton won the popular vote in 2016? For some here, Democrats and their campaigns are not responsible for their results, nor are they responsible for what is not accomplished during their time in office.
