My last login was in January of this year. At that time I set a password and got the information I needed. I wanted to get an update and Im alarmed because the site since DOGE has come on board is now requiring photo identification.
Two words: Hell. No.
Im so sick of the fucking data pirates.

(9,150 posts)requiring all of this and fingerprints. Even though I am not an employee and my interaction with them is business to business. they also request a copy of our drivers license and a copy of all of the titles to our equipment. Even the titles for equipment not being used to do any job for them. They claim it is because of all of the cargo theft that is going on. There is cargo theft and it has increased but the loads stolen are specific high end things such as liquor, laptop computers etc. They know this but they still put haulers like me through this crap even though we are just hauling a load of plywood or scrap paper etc.
I've had some of them hang up the phone when I ask them if they are so stupid as to believe that someone is going to steal a load of scrap paper. They all refuse to say who has access to the information we provide, what safeguards they have and how long our info will be kept on file. So in other words they want all of our info while giving none of their own. These folks are the freight brokers in the industry and over the last 30 years they have come to have a stranglehold on freight access for smaller operators like myself.

(3,563 posts)Go through part of the login.gov process online (without scanning your ID or taking a photo), then select verifying at the post office. You'll print out a barcode and take it there. Just did this with my partner. The postal clerk scanned the barcode, checked the ID, and we were done. The clerk did not scan the id or even type in the ID number, just verified it matched the person and the info on the screen. You then go back to your computer and finish up the registration process.
I've heard that it's better/easier to use login.gov than id.me, fwiw.
A verified login has been in the works for a long time. They started with smaller services before making it a requirement for the big kahuna of SSA.
just did this with wife's account. walked in local participating USPS office. person scanned bar code we had printed out from online. checked her state id which is a never expiring one and scanned that. went home, waited until next day and was approved.
was very easy after many struggles trying to get her online with SS account.
so far, I haven't been asked to come up with picture id when I log in. I have had the gov log in for years though.

(16,483 posts)I will probably go today. I wish Id never set up the login.gov account. I am going to try to delete it.

(14,206 posts)I went to ssa.gov instead of login.gov. Only additional verification was a code texted to my phone.

(3,563 posts)So you can show that to the postal clerk. Maybe you could have it sent to a phone, but I don't remember seeing that.

(38,824 posts)Theoretically, it was tied to my authenticator app. It wasn't. There was no other way to authenticate it.
So now I have to go through the process of authenticating my identity to connect it to my social security account. I think I'll head on down to the post office, rather than go through the online process. I'll probably have to do the same for my spouse, since her account is still messed up.
Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
