(27,454 posts)We typically have afternoon storms but theyre calling for storms until Monday. I assure you, it will be a mess. Our Everglades is a delicate wetlands ecosystem and we rely on it for our water systems that surround the area. Aside from thunderstorms and hurricanes, our Everglades catch fire every year..its a necessary and natural part of the ecosystem to regenerate the soil and plant life. So..wildfires in the dry season and floods in the wet season. Been that way since..well, always

(6,518 posts)Still haven't heard whether the detention cell part of the camp is air-conditioned or not. The supervisory building(s) must be. Anybody know?

(6,518 posts)Thought I saw generators, but didn't know if they were just for the overseers' quarters. Temps in June to Sept. are extreme in that area. And given that multiple people are stuffed into those tight quarters, it would mean life-threatening heat.

(20,731 posts)The wildfires in the dry/winter season stink to high heaven. The rainy season (now) raises the water level of the glades because they drain slowly into the sea.

(6,518 posts)Can recall as a kid seeing photos/videos of animals drowning and it was really upsetting. This camp is technically not in the Everglades, but is in the Big Cypress National Preserve -- home to a dwindling population of Florida panthers and other species.
It's a deceptively delicate ecosystem. In the 1500s it was home to the Calusa native people. The Miccosukee tribe has done a marvelous job of fighting to maintain the system since the late 1940s and 50s.

(280 posts)The reich wing always complained about government spending, but there's no limit to spending when it comes to fulfilling their psychopathic racist fantasies. No money for healthcare but plenty of money for concentration camps.

(8,083 posts)I've been trying to find out how many detainees are there already. One news account said that the first detainees were supposed to land overnight. I still can't believe that anything this dystopian is happening in America.
I posted earlier a link to the Reddit site for people applying to become ICE agents. The pay is very high, and the jobs are plentiful. Young men with nothing going on are flocking to those jobs. In this job market, it might be one of the best paying jobs for men without college degrees. We're creating future monsters.
