J.D. Vance Says Immigrants Will 'Bankrupt' the Federal Government. The Opposite Is True.

Hours before he cast the tie-breaking vote on a major tax and spending bill in the Senate, Vice President J.D. Vance attempted to reframe the debate over the legislation.

Instead of thinking about the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) as a matter of fiscal policy that's primarily aimed at extending the 2017 personal income tax cuts, Vance said lawmakers should see it as a crucial piece of the Trump administration's ongoing immigration enforcement efforts.

The fiscal policy debate—including big details like how much the bill adds to the deficit and how Republicans are trying to hide those consequences—is "immaterial compared to the ICE money and immigration enforcement provisions," Vance wrote on X. "The thing that will bankrupt this country more than any other policy is flooding the country with illegal immigration and then giving those migrants generous benefits. The OBBB fixes this problem. And therefore it must pass."

Vance's claim is factually wrong—more on that in just a moment—but it is also telling.

4. He's lying and he knows it. Undocumented immigrants aren't eligible for most benefits.

They don't get SNAP, nonemergency Medicaid, SSI, TANF, or subsidies under the ACA. They don't get Social Security. The only benefits they might get are some emergency medical care and school lunches in states that offer them. Vance must know this, just like he knew damn well that the Haitians in Springfield weren't eating pets but he said it anyway.

8. I was on Medicaid for a few years back in the mid 2000s

Every year my information had to be re-verified and the first thing they want to know is proof of your citizenship. No citizenship, no Medicaid. Every year. I don’t know where Vance and his hateful clan get this idea that undocumented immigrants get Medicaid. They just keep parroting this lie over and over.

7. Not a single claim of his makes sense

Immigrants come here and work jobs no one else wants. They rent lodging. They buy groceries, dine out, pay utilities. They infuse money into their local economy, pay tax on purchases and perform services no one else wants to do.

It's so obvious that they benefit their communities.
