The actual roses aren't being touched.

Looks like they spread plastic over the dirt, sand/gravel on top of that, to make a paver base while installing drainage (that's the reason for the ditch, I'd assume).

The complaint was inconvenience: apparently when it rained, water squished up and was annoying. So, pavers. (Which is the reason that I put pavers down from my driveway to the back gate, and extended the raised patio to join the gate.)

I like grass, but I don't know that I care that much about sod that can easily be relaid in 4 years.
