It occurs to me that when Trump says "no tax on overtime" he could mean no witholding from the paychecks, or no....

......tax due upon filing in April. Distinguishing between regular time pay and overtime pay also seems to be a something ripe for cheating and manipulation without a bunch of rules.

Pretty sure that is not in the bill. Ms. Toad Jul 2025 #3

OK, you got me. The reporting since the BBB passed has led me to believe that these tax changes are part and parcel.... FadedMullet Jul 2025 #4

As in, you will be required to work when your employer wants you to and take what they pay you by the job, not on how long it takes you to do it. So no need to pay overtime, and no need to tax overtime.

We'd have heard something about it from labor groups if the bill had modified the overtime structure.

And - if the bill really means zero tax on overtime (rather than just zero income tax), it will still be a savings for employers - because they won't have to match the employee FICA deduction for social security and Medicare on overtime.

And what he means is completely irrelevant, now that the bill has passed and been signed into law. What will happen is whatever is in the bill.

What happens will be what the bill (passed by Congress) wrote into the law.

I haven't read that portion of the bill closely enough to know what Congress decided about the mechanics of the matter. It could be a front page deduction (available to all traditionally tipped employees), or a second page deduction (available only to those who itemize). It could be only income tax will be a deduction - and FICA taxes will continue to be owed. Currently all tips are supposed to be reported to the employer so that FICA taxes and income tax can be withheld - that may be addressed in the bill.

But what matters is what the bill says - not the garbage that flows from Trump's mouth.
