Lest anybody get the wrong impression about that. My ex (we're still on good terms) was a Mystic camper and later a counselor. She's a devout Catholic, but also progressive and pro choice. One of her fellow counselors and still a close friend is lesbian. Mystic offers devotional services for those who wish to participate but it's not in your face. Campers of all creeds and no creed are welcome. My ex considers those times among the fondest memories of her life and happily recommends Mystic to anyone looking for a summer camp experience. She wouldn't do that if it were some kind of fundamentalist enclave.

This classmate is a hard core Democrat who dragged my middle child into some fun protests during high school. They protested in front of G.H.W. Bush's church on a number of occasions

(15,602 posts)Words without works is like painting those sepulchres...sounds really righteous until you get close enough to smell the corruption and rot.
Tell me you know the Beatitudes, or show me.
Talk is cheap and easy, works are hard.

(4,278 posts)(verses 31-46) that Jesus's teachings there have made it hard to overcome the lies and heresies of Christian Nationalists and others on the Christian Right. Their voices are loud and they seek the limelight, using shocking claims about who Jesus is/was.
Several scriptures say we should be humble, not proud or boasting, and we shouldn't pray in public for attention but do our praying in secret.
We are not good at seeking attention for ourselves. Makes it hard to counter the many ways they defame Christ.

I find a few interesting, Friends Church, Redletterbible. Org and some Unitarians. Even some Methodist churches.
I lean toward Eastern Philosophy for actual practice. I lower my blood pressure and anxiety with the a certain Buddhist mediation that I like.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
This week we're running a special pop-up mini fund drive. From Monday through Friday we're going ad-free for all registered members, and we're asking you to kick in to the DU tip jar to support the site and keep us financially healthy.
As a bonus, making a contribution will allow you to leave kudos for another DU member, and at the end of the week we'll recognize the DUers who you think make this community great.
