I doubt Auschwitz has the same cachet on a T-shirt.

Alcatraz is the name of a prison where people were sent after having had a trial.
Auschwitz is the infamous name of a concentration camp where innocent kidnapped people were illegally disappeared into with no trial.

Its important to be clear and precise about what is happening.

I'm the daughter of an Auschwitz survivor, and although I understand completely the revulsion to Alligator Alcatraz, Auschwitz is a singular location, dedicated to extermination so I personally would prefer it be kept as a symbol of the depravity and evil of the Holocaust.

Trump and his cronies are following in the path of Hitler, calling on the same sentiments in their followers - and using many of the same tools, including sending those who sully the white-cis-male purity to concentration camps both within, and outside of, the United States.

But he is not yet sending them to death camps, in which the explicit intention is the mass murder of all who are sent there.

Auschwitz calls to mind the millions murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau; less so the Nuremburg laws, the purging of competent high level administration and replacing them with loyalists, the criminalizing of "undesireables", and initially sending individuals to concentration camps - for purposes short of mass murder.

I think calling out the parallels between early Hitler and Trump is far more critical than using a name more synonymous with the place millions were murdered - a name many have indicated is hurtful.

I think we should avoid the name Auschwitz, but find another way to point out that it is, in fact, a concentration camp.

Herding people into a gas chamber is, in most jurisdictions, first degree murder. Sending people to a miserable location which may, or may not, be in the path of a future hurricane is at most negligent homicide. They are different levels of intent.

And, more to the point, using the name of Auschwitz-Birkenau - the most deadly deadly concentration camps - offends those whose religious, cultural, and ancestors were murdered there.

While I am not willing to pretend there are not terrifying similarities between Trump and Hitler, or to avoid labeling the Florida concentration camp for what it is, I am also not willing to point those similarities out by using a name I have been told is offensive and that does not describe what is currently going on there.

I am former member of the board of my 2400 family temple and have got to listen a good number of holocaust survivors over the years. trump/DeathSantis' new facility is a concentration camp where it is likely that normal law abiding detainees may end up (over 60% of the ICE detainees have no criminal record).
This facility is not Auschwitz but could be just the beginning

The metal cages have wire tops you can't get out in case of fire or flood.
It's hurricane season, that base is in the Everglades surrounded by water, and hurricanes can produce 10-12 feet of storm surge wind driven water.
When a hurricane strikes,you have a death camp.
