MI-SEN: Democrat Abdul El-Sayed to report $1.8M raised for Senate bid in Michigan

The campaign of El-Sayed of Ann Arbor said that total covered 22,000 donations from 17,000 individuals and that 95% of the donations received were under $100. He is not accepting donations from corporate political action committees.

“Our movement is about the kind of folks who don’t have lobbyists or PACs,” El-Sayed said in a statement. “It’s why so many Michiganders contributed their time, their hard-earned dollars, their stories, or their support. Across the state, people are fired up for real change.”

El-Sayed is running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate, seeking the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield Township.

His total is just behind the haul reported by state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak, who said she raised over $2.1 million since launching her U.S. Senate campaign in early April.

1. McMorrow took a courageous stand long ago. She has my support for as long as she stays in the race.

Her speech against a transphobic Republican on the Michigan State Senate floor in 2022 did it for me. I was hoping she would make a run for national office sooner or later. Now she has, and I'm with her.
