This thread 🧵 from back when rumors of this maneuver first surfaced still sums up my take. It is a risky, high-stakes play, both from an electoral and a legal standpoint.

To that thread, I will only add that *if* Texas is found to have intentionally discriminated against minority voters in the upcoming round of redistricting, that finding could serve as the basis for bailing the state back into preclearance using Section 3 of the Voting Rights Act.

🚨🚨UPDATE: Via Brad Johnson over on Twitter, it looks like DOJ is helping to set up the mid-decade Texas redraw by raising supposed legal concerns about: TX-09 , TX-18, and TX-29 in Metro Houston and TX-33 in the DFW Metroplex. #txlege

TX-09 is currently represented by Al Green, TX-18 was the former district of Sylvester Turner, TX-29 is Sylvia Garcia’s district, and TX-33 is Marc Veasey’s district. #txlege

Just ahead of a wave election.

When it backfires, though, they can parade the white hat guys with serious demeanor blaming it on someone else.

Used to kick giant Texas Cockroaches in a corner.
Obviously hard working ranchers that cowboy from 5:00 AM until 9 PM 7 days a week.
Wait, ya telling me they hire undocumented Latinos to do the hard ranch work????

which is much more difficult than it sounds so instead...created the new Party in selective states, Texas being the first since his HQ is here. Spread his backwards BS throughout the State and draw off the shitkickers and rednecks from the GOP thereby creating a win by the Texas Democratic Party. If we could ever take back Texas (hasn't happened in 30 years) with it's 40 electoral votes, the GOP could never win a national election again.
