Missouri Governor repeals paid sick leave

In 2024, Missouri voters, by a vote of nearly 60%, approved a ballot proposition providing workers with sick leave. Yesterday, Missouri governor Mike Kehoe signed legislation repealing the proposition. In addition to repealing sick leave, he signed legislation repealing a voter approve proposition indexing the minimum wage to the rate of inflation.

If anyone thinks the republicans are the party of the worker just look at Missouri. Why did he do that? Besides being owned by billionaires, corporations, and businesses the republicans just have a streak of cruelty in them. For them, it's about acquiring power, retaining power, and exercising power to benefit those that keep them in power.

Missouri's Republican governor on Thursday signed legislation repealing the paid sick leave portion of a ballot measure that the state's voters approved with nearly 60% support in the 2024 election.

The short-lived provision, which will officially be repealed on August 28, required Missouri employers to provide workers with an hour of paid sick time for every 30 hours of work. Businesses with 15 or more employees were required to provide up to 56 hours of earned paid sick time per year, and businesses with fewer than 15 employees were required to provide at least 40 hours of paid sick time.

The bill that Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe signed Thursday, known as H.B. 567, also restricts increases in the state's minimum wage. The voter-approved initiative called for raising the state's minimum wage to $15 an hour in 2026 and indexing it to inflation thereafter. H.B. 567 eliminates the inflation adjustment.

The Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a business lobbying group, characterized H.B. 567 as its top legislative priority. The bill was led by state Rep. Sherri Gallick (R-62) and state Sen. Mike Bernskoetter (R-6).

It’s interesting that MAGA just passed their bill taking away healthcare for millions to pay for tax cuts for the rich. But one small step to help middle class workers get sick leave is rejected. They really are deplorable.

When these referenda pass even in deep red states you should center of your campaigning around these issues.

People in red states think Dems care more about how diverse fortune 500 CEOs are than working people.

The state, county, and municipal committees have NOTHING to lose by going after MO maga pubs. Be cruel to them. Let go of fair play. Be cruel and never let up.

The governor signed it.

Literally every Republican in state government is responsible for overturning the overwhelming vote of the people of Missouri in a statewide ballot referendum.

Legislators used to be scared to do such a thing, but not in the current propaganda environment. Missouri voters should remove them all from office at the earliest convenience, but of course they won't.

Disgusting.
