One thing about Alcatraz you won't hear Republicans talk about.

Every single inmate residing there EVER had the opportunity to see a judge and get convicted according to law before being thrown into prison.

Proven rapists, murderers. bank robbers, con men went to Alcatraz. Very few innocent gardeners, hairdressers, moms, or foreign students.

Those were the good old days. Alcatraz was brutal. But it passed for justuce at one time. It's better than Trump is offering detainees never charged with a crime,

The people sent to Alcatraz were given due process of law.

The people sent to Auschwitz weren't, they were just grabbed off the street.

Convicted for shooting and killing a bartender then killing a prison guard. The man was dangerous.

Look at his picture here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Stroud

He looks very much like Stephen Miller....birds of a feather you could say.

Agreed you wouldn't want to be around Stroud either, and that prison was where he belonged, but he appears to have had other facets which Miller doesn't.

He made a pass at a Latina and she turned him down, which humiliated him. Entitled boys aren't supposed to be turned down, don't you know? I think that is what sent him over the edge to hate Latinos. He then broke up with his childhood best friend, a Latino. He explicitly told him it was because he was a Latino. https://medium.com/the-polis/what-was-stephen-miller-like-in-high-school-bff6c18a995e

He even wrote a highly regarded book on the subject. This despite being a total sociopath and dangerous to boot.

I think he lost the access and ability to work with birds when he was transferred to Alcatraz.

Ironic because one of the island's main functions post prison occupation is an excellent sea bird sanctuary.

Made a lasting impression. I would never, ever want to reside there. And the trump tower at desantis ville is worse. You don’t have to be guilty of anything to be locked up there. Conservative values in action.

every time the boat that pumped out the sewage holding tank was a little late.

Alcatraz was vile. Everything had to come in by boat. Everything had to go out by boat. Throw in some underfunding by Republicans who are heavily into the punitive aspect of incarceration, and you have condiions deteriorating rapidly.

Brutalized men who were already convictd of heinous crimes got worse, not better.

Finally, it all just got too expensive to maintain. Security had improved to the point that ultra secure prisons could be built on land with things like adequate water and sewer systems.

Almost no one went to Alcatraz first. It was where you went if you couldn't be managed in a cheaper-to-use prison.
