___As the Taliban closed in on Kabul in the summer of 2021, then-Senator Marco Rubio co-authored a letter to President Joe Biden urging him to “ensure the safety and security of Afghans who have worked closely” with American intelligence agencies: “Abandoning these individuals” would be “a stain on our national conscience.” After the Afghan government fell and tens of thousands of Afghans rushed to the Kabul airport, trying desperately to be evacuated with the last American troops, Rubio excoriated Biden for leaving Afghan allies behind to be killed.

Then-Representative Mike Waltz warned that “our local allies are being hunted down.” Kash Patel accused the Biden administration of “the stranding of US personnel and allies.” The Republican majority of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, in a damning report on the fall of Afghanistan, said that Biden’s “abandonment of our Afghan allies, who fought alongside the U.S. military against the Taliban—their brothers in arms—is a stain on his administration.”

Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the termination of the program for Afghanistan in May. In a statement, Noem said that the conditions in Afghanistan have improved enough to warrant the termination.

More than 11,000 Afghan refugees are currently in the U.S. under TPS, with a significant number residing in San Diego. The Trump administration's decision to end these protections comes despite concerns from refugee advocates about the safety of those who may be forced to return.

Veterans accuse Congress of abandoning Afghan allies after help for refugees is left out of spending bill
The opposition of Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, helped torpedo the proposal, refugee groups and veterans organizations said.

More than 30 retired senior U.S. military officers, including three former chairmen of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, endorsed the bill, as did eight former U.S. ambassadors to Afghanistan.

During the U.S. military withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, more than 70,000 Afghans were flown to the U.S. The Afghan refugees were granted a two-year temporary “humanitarian parole,” which has left them in legal limbo and unable to work. The bill would have granted Afghan refugees a pathway to permanent legal residency before their parole expires.

Congress has previously passed similar legislation for Vietnamese, Cuban and other refugees.

Why, when these people who worked with our government during US occupation return to their Homeland, they will be greeted with red carpets, rose petals, the whole nine yards. The Taliban will be all "Hey, guys and gals, we want you to know right away: no harm, no foul! In fact, let's get you some great jobs! Oh, would any of you young women like to attend COLLEGE?!? Let's get you signed up!"
