As Screwtape (servant of Satan) states in his address to the College of Tempters:

“All said and done, my friends, it will be an ill day for us if what most humans mean by ‘Religion’ ever vanishes from the Earth. It can still send us the truly delicious sins. Nowhere do we tempt so successfully as on the very steps of the altar.”

I'm not terribly well read myself, due to a 1970's misspent youth, but I love that there is an historically pithy quote for most of our current troubles. Kudos for your knowledge and ability to draw upon it.

C. S. Lewis had a deep understanding of human nature. I am not religious, but I have read many of Lewis's books, which have a religious slant but are much broader in their insights on life in general. And they are especially helpful in these tough times.
