Bernie Sanders clarifies position on undocumented immigrants with Anderson Cooper

I can’t decide if he misspoke somewhat or has changed on his positioning.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), in an interview with CNN host Anderson Cooper, acknowledged that most people would support deporting an undocumented immigrant.

“Look, this is where I think the American people are at. If you are a drug dealer, if you are somebody in this country undocumented or has committed a crime, I think most people think, Hey, have a nice day. You're out of here. And I support that. But the truth is that the vast majority of the people who are being picked up, put on -- put in vans, sent to detention centers, and God knows what else, these are people who do not have criminal records in the United States of America.”

...to believe that an undocumented immigrant who has committed a crime should be deported after they've served their sentence.

But in context it sounds like a speech error he caught and immediately conducted a bit of repair on.

That's what we do. You want to really annoy a speaker, give him/her a close transcription. Most of us come off, unless we're reading from a script or have things memorized to the point it's recitation while you're thinking about other things, as blithering idiots.

and seeing them as taking jobs from certain Americans.

He has softened his views (at least in public) because of certain changes in the country.
